Review of “12 notes on life and creativity”

2025/1/21 Edited to

... Read morePicking up Quincy Jones’s '12 Notes on Life and Creativity' felt like embarking on a journey with a wise mentor, and honestly, it’s been one of the most enriching reads this year. I initially picked it up because I’m always looking for ways to boost my own creative process, and who better to learn from than a legend like Quincy? What I found was so much more than just tips for artists. This book truly lives up to its title as a wisdom-filled guide. Quincy doesn't just talk about music; he talks about life through music, showing how the principles that make a great song also apply to a well-lived life. His insights into collaboration, perseverance, and the sheer joy of creation are incredibly inspiring. I loved how he blends personal anecdotes from his incredible musical legacy with actionable advice. It’s like getting a backstage pass to his mind, filled with the handwritten notes and thoughts that have shaped decades of iconic sound. One of the biggest takeaways for me was understanding how interconnected everything is. He emphasizes the importance of listening — not just to sounds, but to people, to your intuition, and to the world around you. This really shifted my creative perspective. Suddenly, challenges I faced in my own projects started to look like opportunities for new arrangements, much like a composer might approach a difficult piece. The book helps you see that creativity isn't just about output; it's about input and how you process the world. He touches upon the idea that 'THE WORLD CANNOT LIVE, WITHOUT WATER & MUSIC,' and this phrase really stuck with me. It’s a powerful reminder of the fundamental role art plays in our existence. It’s not a luxury; it’s essential. This perspective gives such weight to every creative endeavor, big or small. It’s about finding your own rhythm and contributing to the global symphony of life. For anyone feeling a creative block or just looking for a fresh dose of inspiration, I can’t recommend this enough. It’s not just for musicians; it’s for anyone who creates, anyone who dreams, and anyone who wants to live a more fulfilling life. The way Quincy breaks down complex ideas into these 'notes' makes them incredibly accessible and easy to reflect on. It’s truly helped me in unlocking creative potential I didn't even realize I had. It's a book you'll want to revisit, highlighting passages and letting his wisdom marinate. You’ll walk away feeling not just inspired, but fundamentally changed in how you approach both your craft and your life.
