Saona Island: The Dominican Republic
I just got back from a fun vacay and am excited to tell you about it bit by bit.
Saona Island is a small island about and hour and some change from one of the major beaches. At this beach you don’t have to deal with vendors and super crowded beaches.
We got there through a tourist company but there are many different ways to get there. We also chose a more private boat experience because we didn’t want to be squeezed in. But the other boats did still look just as fun! Through the one we went through it included transportation to and from our resort and island. (We took a speed boat otw back it was a lot of fun)
The water was really nice, there was plenty of seating for us along with a delicious buffet style lunch on the actual island.

My trip to Saona Island was an absolute dream, and I'm still reliving every moment! Beyond the initial speed boat thrill, the journey itself was part of the adventure. As we cruised through the vibrant turquoise waters, the views were breathtaking. There are plenty of options, from lively party boats to more intimate private excursions like ours. If you're wondering which to choose, think about your vibe – do you want to dance with a crowd or enjoy a peaceful ride? Either way, you're in for a treat as you approach the island. One of the absolute highlights was stopping at a shallow sandbar, often called a 'natural swimming pool.' Imagine standing in chest-high, crystal-clear blue ocean water, surrounded by nothing but the vast sea and distant green land. It's truly magical! Many tours include a stop here, and if you're lucky and respectful of nature, you might even spot some starfish. This is where you can truly appreciate the clarity of the water – it's like a giant, warm swimming pool. Once on Saona Island itself, the stunning tropical beach scene unfolds. The white sand is incredibly soft, perfect for leaving a footprint as you stroll along the shore, and the iconic palm trees sway gently, providing welcome shade. You'll find plenty of spots to relax, whether it's under a palm tree or right by the water's edge. Our tour included a delicious buffet-style lunch right on the beach, which was such a fantastic touch – fresh food with an unbeatable view! For those planning a visit and wondering about the 'best visit time,' I'd suggest going during the dry season, which typically runs from December to May. The weather is generally sunny and less humid, making for perfect beach days. However, Saona Island is beautiful year-round. No matter when you go, make sure to pack your swimsuit, sunscreen, a hat, and definitely a waterproof camera, because you'll want to capture every moment of those incredible turquoise waters and white sand beaches! Oh, and don't forget to try one of those refreshing pineapple drinks – they're a must-have for the full island experience!
