Things I eat when I’m riding the struggle bus

I’m over this “only eat salad and vegetables” when you are feeling low narrative. I understand this can be helpful from a health standpoint - I often do this myself! But sometimes, people are just not capable of doing that for many reasons.

Whether its inaccessible financially, they don’t have the spoons or energy, or it just doesn;t sound good… It’s okay to just eat what feels right when you are stressed out. Adding expectations won’t lessen the stress.

I used to feel so much guilt if my meal wasn’t a perfect, nutrient-dense salad, especially when my mental health was taking a hit. But I’ve learned that sometimes, the kindest thing you can do for yourself is to simply eat what feels right and brings you a little bit of comfort. It’s all about finding anything that makes you happy and fuels your body, without judgment. For me, when I'm really feeling low, I often reach for foods that offer a sense of warmth, nostalgia, or just pure deliciousness with minimal effort. Think about those dishes that instantly make you feel hugged from the inside – maybe it's a creamy pasta, a hearty bowl of soup, or even something as simple as a grilled cheese sandwich. And yes, packaged food counts! We aren't purists here, and sometimes a quick microwave meal or a bag of your favorite chips is exactly what you need to get through a tough moment. It's about nourishment in all its forms, not just the 'raw' or 'organic' kind. I've found that sometimes the physical act of preparing a simple meal can be therapeutic, but other times, even that feels like too much. On those days, having easy, go-to options ready is a lifesaver. This could be frozen meals, takeout from your favorite local spot, or even just a quick snack that satisfies a craving. The goal isn't culinary perfection; it's self-preservation. What's more important than what you eat is how you feel and care for yourself. It’s also important to remember that 'food with vitamins' doesn't always have to come in the form of a raw vegetable platter. Many comfort foods, like a stew packed with potatoes and carrots, or a sandwich on whole-grain bread, can offer valuable nutrients alongside their comforting qualities. It's about balance over time, not perfection in every single meal. When you're stressed, your body needs energy and sometimes familiar, easy-to-digest foods are best. Ultimately, this journey is about listening to your body and your mind. If a specific food brings you joy and takes a little bit of the edge off your stress, then it's serving a purpose. We all have different coping mechanisms, and finding comfort in food, without the added burden of guilt, can be a valid and important part of managing your mental well-being. So next time you're asking yourself what to eat when you're feeling stressed out, remember to be kind to yourself first. Choose what brings you a moment of peace, a spark of happiness, and helps you keep going.
