Perfection isn’t the goal - it’s not realistic

I’ve been labeled a perfectionist by both myself and others for my entire life. First I thought it was related to OCD… then I realized it may be tied into ADHD or autism.

Wherever it comes from, over time I’ve realized it’s not healthy. Did I do some amazing projects and work I was proud of? 100%. Did it also burn me out quickly and lead to me over extending myself? Yep.

Right now, I’m working on making sure I do things that bring me joy, and letting things that stress me out take a back seat. Making everything perfect is one of those things.

Have you struggled with perfectionism?

... Read moreIt's so easy to get caught in the trap of perfectionism, isn't it? For years, I felt like I was constantly chasing an impossible ideal, always expecting perfection from myself, whether it was in my work, hobbies, or even just daily tasks. This constant striving often led to a spiral of perfectionism anxiety, where I'd feel overwhelmed, inadequate, and utterly burned out. It truly felt like my best wasn't enough, no matter how much effort I poured in. But slowly, I've started to shift my mindset, and I want to share some things that have really helped me in battling perfectionism. One of the biggest game-changers has been practicing self-compassion. Instead of beating myself up for minor mistakes or things that aren't 'perfect,' I try to talk to myself like I would a friend. It sounds simple, but it's powerful. This often means reminding myself, 'Hey, you are enough. Your best is enough.' It’s a message I’ve had to internalize repeatedly. Another strategy has been setting realistic, flexible goals. Often, perfectionism stems from an all-or-nothing mentality. If it can't be perfect, why bother? I've learned to break down tasks into smaller, manageable steps and celebrate progress, not just the final, flawless outcome. Sometimes, 'good enough' really is exactly that – good enough. And honestly, it often feels better than the stress of chasing an unattainable ideal. For anyone struggling with perfectionism anxiety, especially if you're neurodivergent, understanding how your brain works can be incredibly helpful. For some, the hyperfocus associated with ADHD or the rigid thinking patterns sometimes seen in autism can fuel perfectionist tendencies. Recognizing this isn't an excuse, but a powerful tool for self-understanding and developing tailored coping mechanisms. For example, I've found that time-boxing tasks helps prevent endless tweaking, and having a clear 'stop' point for projects prevents me from over-extending. Finally, it’s crucial to redefine what success means to you. Is it about flawlessly executing every single detail, or is it about completing something with effort and passion, even if it has a few quirks? I’ve chosen the latter. This shift has not only reduced my anxiety but also allowed me to actually enjoy the process of creating and doing things, rather than just fixating on the end result. Remember, your worth isn't tied to flawless execution. It's tied to who you are and the effort you put in. Embrace the imperfect journey; it's often the most authentic one.

Perfection feels productive.
But a lot of the time—it’s protection.
And protection has a cost. Not in outcomes. In experience. In how much of your life you actually get to feel. Joy doesn’t live in “almost right.” It lives in messy, present, real moments. So the question isn’t— “Did I do it perfectly?” It’s— “Was I actually there for it?” #N
