NOT ACTUALLY HEALTHY🚫😭

2024/3/18 Edited to

... Read moreThe original post really hit home for me, asking what we think is healthy but might actually be sabotaging our well-being. I've been there, staring at a plate of "super healthy" food feeling completely miserable, and wondering why I couldn't just enjoy it. For too long, I believed that for food to be healthy, it had to be bland or restrictive. But what if that mindset itself is unhealthy? Let's talk about some common culprits. The idea around "processed foods labeled 'fat-free' or 'reduced fat' may" not always be the best choice resonates with my experience. I used to grab those "low-fat" yogurts or "reduced-fat" cookies thinking I was making a smart choice. But often, to compensate for the removed fat, manufacturers pump these products full of added sugars, artificial sweeteners, and other additives to make them taste good. So, while you might be cutting fat, you're often getting a hefty dose of something else that's not beneficial, leading to sugar crashes, cravings, and an overall feeling of dissatisfaction. I learned that sometimes, a small portion of the full-fat, natural alternative is actually much more satisfying and genuinely healthier than its processed, "fat-free" counterpart. Take "fruit snacks," for instance – many are just glorified candy with minimal actual fruit content. Then there’s the whole category of "deep fried foods assortment unhealthy" or "fried fast food assortment unhealthy." Who doesn't love crispy fried chicken, golden french fries, or a delicious donut? While these items are undeniably tasty, consuming them regularly can take a toll. They are often cooked in unhealthy oils, leading to high levels of unhealthy fats that can contribute to inflammation and other health issues. My journey has taught me it's not about cutting them out entirely if you genuinely enjoy them, but rather understanding that they're treats, not daily staples. Moderation is key here. If enjoying a small portion of your favorite deep-fried treat occasionally brings you joy, that's a different story than feeling guilty after every bite. Many of us grapple with "which food is considered unhealthy?" and the pressure to eat "actually healthy food." We're told "low-fat yogurt," "whole-grain rice," "almonds," and "fruit snacks" are good for us. And yes, whole-grain rice and almonds are fantastic! They provide excellent nutrients. But the context matters. Is that low-fat yogurt loaded with sugar? Are your fruit snacks just candy? And even healthy foods like almonds, in excessive amounts, can still contribute to unwanted changes. It's about balance and listening to your body. Ultimately, "foods that are bad for you" isn't a simple black-and-white list. It's about how those foods make you feel, both physically and mentally. The original post's point, "eating foods...that make you miserable, isn't healthy," really struck a chord. If a strict diet of "healthy" foods leaves you constantly craving, stressed, or unhappy, that's not a sustainable or truly healthy approach. Instead of focusing on "what is considered bad," I've shifted my perspective to what makes me feel energized, nourished, and happy. This doesn't mean eating pastries or chocolate every day, but it means finding joy in my meals and allowing for occasional indulgences without guilt. Real health encompasses not just physical nutrition but also mental well-being and a positive relationship with food. So next time you're wondering what's actually healthy, ask yourself: does this food nourish my body, and does it bring me some joy?
