part 1 working in america

this was 18 years ago. and atp i wish he never left the hospital.

... Read moreWow, reading about that situation just brought back so many feelings. It really hits home when you hear stories about working in America and facing such an impossible dilemma. I can totally relate to the frustration and heartbreak when a family emergency strikes, and your workplace doesn't understand. It's not just about a 'dad being sick'—it's about a critical moment, potentially life or death, and needing to be there for your loved ones. I remember a similar moment, not as extreme as a parent in the hospital, unconscious and not responding to treatment, but stressful nonetheless. It makes you realize how vulnerable employees can be. Many people assume there are strong protections, but it's not always the case. For instance, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a fantastic resource, but it only applies to certain employers (50+ employees within 75 miles) and employees (worked 1,250 hours in the past 12 months). So, if you're in a smaller company or haven't met the hours, you might find yourself in a bind, just like in that heartbreaking example where the manager essentially said, 'I am not coming in now, you can wait.' It truly makes you wonder about the 'special treatment' accusation, when it's simply an 'emergency.' My advice, from personal experience, is always to know your company's policies inside and out. Understand your PTO, sick leave, and emergency leave rules before you need them. It's a tough conversation to have proactively, but it can save you so much grief. If you find yourself in a situation where a manager is being unsupportive, especially during a crisis like a parent potentially 'dying,' document everything. Keep records of calls, texts, and emails. Even if you feel like 'I am leaving whether you come in or not,' having that paper trail can be crucial if you ever need to escalate to HR or seek legal advice. It's also important to remember your own well-being. Sometimes, as hard as it is, the best decision for your mental and emotional health is to say, 'I quit.' No job is worth sacrificing your family or your peace of mind, especially when dealing with something as serious as a loved one in the hospital. The thought of 'not waiting 3 hours to leave when it is a 90 minute drive to the hospital' perfectly captures that desperate urgency. Finding a workplace that truly values its employees and understands that life happens is a game changer. Look for companies with clear, supportive policies and positive reviews regarding work-life balance. It might not seem like a big deal until an 'emergency' hits, but it truly makes all the difference. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself, and remember, sometimes 'I am on my way' to a better opportunity is the best response to a toxic environment.

My sister was babysitting my 4 year old son and rushed him to the hospital bc his oxygen was 87 (they hospitalize at 96). I was managing 2 stores at the time & I called one of the girls from the other store to come cover so I could meet my sister at the hospital with my son and the girl said no bc she had a nail appt 😬 (she was at work and scheduled to leave at 3, staying would’ve had her leaving at 5). I called my boss & told her the store was short handed bc I wasn’t staying & I went to the hospital where we then spent 3 days bc he was admitted.
