An actual statement from a client this week 🤣
To be fair, this was after I had cleaned ears, instilled meds, drew blood, trimmed nails, got medications together and collected urine to complete their blood panel 😅😇
To all the DVMs, let’s not pretend you are not 1000000% essential 😂 it’s just shocking to get that kind of recognition from the client
As a veterinary technician, I often find myself performing a variety of hands-on tasks that are essential to a pet's health but sometimes go unnoticed by clients. From cleaning ears, instilling medications, drawing blood, trimming nails, to collecting urine samples for blood panels, the day is packed with detailed medical work that ensures the veterinarian has accurate information to make diagnoses. Clients may assume that the doctor is the one doing all the 'hard work,' but the reality on the ground is quite different. Vet techs are the backbone of any veterinary practice, often acting as the liaison between pets, owners, and the veterinary team. This kind of direct recognition from a client—where they explicitly acknowledge the techs’ efforts—is incredibly rewarding and reminds us that our contributions are indispensable. Working closely with veterinarians (DVMs), vet techs provide critical support that cannot be overstated. Without accurate sample collection and preparation, administering medications, and monitoring patient vitals, the vet’s ability to treat and care for animals would be compromised. While DVMs bring their expertise to diagnose and prescribe, the tech’s role is hands-on and requires both skill and compassion. In my experience, clear communication with pet owners about what vet techs do helps them appreciate the full scope of care provided. Sharing stories of a typical day, detailing the steps taken in diagnostics and treatment, fosters a better understanding of the team's efforts. It also highlights why both the techs and the veterinarians are critical—each bringing unique skills that together ensure the best care for every pet. Ultimately, vet techs are more than just assistants; we are animal advocates committed to scientific accuracy and compassionate care. Gaining recognition from clients is a wonderful feeling, reinforcing that our hard work truly makes a difference in their pet's health journey.
