How to craft a perfect personal statement🩺

🩺REMINDER: The personal statement (PS) is just that… it is personal!!!

‼️The best advice I got from one of my mentors while writing the personal statement was that… “can you copy a sentence from your PS and paste into someone else’s??? and it will fit??” Then that sentence does not belong in your PS. This is because your PS has to be unique to you as an applicant, and not generic!

‼️You definitely want to avoid generic statements like;

“I want to help people” OR “I love science” OR “I love learning about the body”

🫶Make sure you use tons of anecdotes from personal experiences you have been thru as a premed, to illustrate why it is soooo important from you to be a doctor.

🩺My outline is as follows;

🤎Paragraph 1: The seed! You want to explain what sparked your interest in medicine. You want to share anecdotes about that exact moment when you thought about becoming a doctor! The reader should be able to see it from your own point of view. For example; I talked about my childhood in Uganda with lack of doctors which made me think about it.

🤎Paragraph 2: What you did to explore your interest in medicine? Adcoms really want to see whether you know what you are getting yourself into! This is why it is very important to have clinical experience. This is the paragraph where I shared how I volunteered at a local clinic to explore my interest in medicine. I shared anecdotes of how I participated and how it made me realize that I want to do this.

🤎Paragraph 3: What confirmed my interest in medicine? You need to share anecdotes of the moments you confirmed that you really want to be a doctor and nothing else. In this paragraph, I shared how I started working as a Medical Assistant, and an example of an encounter with a patient and how it made me realize that I want to become a doctor.

🤎Paragraph 4: Conclusion! In this paragraph, you will summarize all the above paragraphs and show how you will apply everything you learnt in your premed experiences to medical school and your future life as a doctor. I would also briefly talk about my goals and plans for the community and the globe as whole after you become a doctor.

... Read moreWriting a personal statement for medical school can be both a challenging and revealing experience. It's crucial to understand that this document represents who you are, and it should resonate with your own journey and motivations. Start by gathering your thoughts and reflecting on the moments that have shaped your ambition to enter the medical field. Consider pivotal experiences, such as volunteering, internships, or shadowing doctors that have confirmed your passion. When drafting your statement, structure it logically. Begin with a compelling introduction that hooks the reader and conveys your initial interest in medicine. This could be a unique story or a defining moment. Follow this with detailed insights into your experiences—provide specific examples of clinical exposure, challenges faced, and the growth you've experienced throughout your premed journey. It's essential to highlight not just your passion but also your preparedness and insights into the medical profession. Adcoms seek candidates who demonstrate a thorough understanding of what a medical career entails, paired with a genuine motivation to care for patients. Illustrating how you've prepared for this journey through hands-on experiences can strongly reinforce your case. Finally, conclude by summarizing how your experiences and aspirations align with your future goals in medicine. Talk about your commitment to serving your community and the bigger picture you envision as a doctor, making sure to reflect your own aspirations rather than generic ideals. This personalized and thoughtful approach can help distinguish your personal statement from others, ensuring it captures the essence of your unique story.
