Millennial vs gen z humor 🫶🏻
All in good fun. But yes we have a ton of makeup🤣
My recent run-in with a Gen Z friend about my 'millennial' lip gloss collection truly got me thinking about the hilarious nuances between our generations! She looked me dead in the eye and, with a straight face, asked if my extensive collection of lip gloss was, in fact, 'a millennial thing.' Honestly, I had to laugh! It's all in good fun, but it highlights how our daily habits, especially around *makeup*, can spark some truly funny generational commentary. It's not just about the sheer volume of lip gloss or other *makeup*; it's a whole vibe! For us millennials, having a diverse stash of different shades, textures, and finishes felt completely normal. We grew up with beauty gurus, product hauls, and the idea of a 'full face' for almost any occasion. To Gen Z, who often leans towards a more minimalist, 'clean girl' aesthetic or quick, impactful looks, our approach might seem… a lot? It's a classic case of 'millennial cringe' versus 'peak Gen Z humor.' This playful 'roast Gen Z' or 'millennial cringe' dynamic is everywhere, and I find it endlessly amusing. We chuckle at their viral TikTok dances or the latest slang we don't quite grasp, and they, in turn, playfully mock our side parts, skinny jeans, or our earnest use of the crying-laughing emoji. I've even taken a 'millennial or Gen Z quiz' online just to see where my tendencies truly lie, and it's always a fun way to reflect on these cultural touchstones. Beyond just makeup and fashion, our humor styles often diverge. Millennials, shaped by the internet's early memes and late-night TV, often embrace a sarcastic, self-deprecating humor rooted in shared experiences like 'adulting' or 90s/early 2000s nostalgia. We’re the generation that mastered the art of the relatable meme before TikTok even existed. Gen Z, on the other hand, often favors a more absurdist, fast-paced, and deeply ironic humor, heavily influenced by rapid-fire internet trends and niche communities. Their 'peak Gen Z humor' can sometimes be so meta or fleeting that it flies right over a millennial's head, requiring a quick explanation. Even our approach to social media can be fodder for comparison. Remember the 'Gen Z vs. Millennial selfie' debate? Gen Z often opts for candid, unfiltered, sometimes even slightly awkward shots that feel authentic. Many millennials, however, still gravitate towards the perfectly posed, carefully filtered, and aesthetically curated feed. It's all part of our unique generational identities and how we choose to present ourselves to the world. But despite these amusing differences, there's a lot of mutual admiration and learning between the generations. My Gen Z friends keep me updated on the latest trends and slang, and I can share insights from 'back in my day.' It’s about respecting each other's eras and enjoying the contrasting perspectives. So, next time a Gen Z friend playfully comments on your extensive makeup collection or your choice of emojis, just know it’s probably coming from a place of curious observation and good vibes. And yes, I’ll still be rocking my favorite lip gloss with pride!
