... Read moreHey everyone! I wanted to share some of my favorite tips for capturing truly stunning teen portraits. As a photographer, I've found that shooting teenagers is a unique and incredibly rewarding experience. They bring so much genuine energy and personality to the camera, and my goal is always to help that shine through in every shot. It’s not just about taking a picture; it’s about telling a story and capturing a moment in their lives. My absolute favorite tool for teen photography? Natural light! You don't need expensive studio setups or complex lighting equipment to get incredible results. I often look for open shade on a bright day, which provides a soft, even light that's super flattering. But my real secret weapon is the 'golden hour' – that magical time just after sunrise or before sunset. The warm, soft glow it casts is simply perfect for creating dreamy, atmospheric portraits. It gives a natural, almost ethereal feel that artificial lights can rarely replicate. Plus, it’s a brilliant way to add depth and dimension without much effort. Posing can sometimes be a bit tricky with teens. They often feel awkward or unsure of what to do, and stiff, forced poses can make a photo look unnatural. My approach is to encourage movement and authenticity. Instead of rigid instructions, I'll suggest actions: walk slowly, laugh naturally, twirl your hair, or even just look out into the distance. Sometimes, I'll have them interact with their environment. For instance, that picture of the young woman with long dark hair I captured recently, where she's slightly squatting on a dark, textured dirt road, wasn't a rigid pose. It was more about her engaging with the setting and finding a comfortable, natural stance. A simple dark dress she wore really added to the dramatic, moody scene we were aiming for, especially against the backdrop of the dark forest where we found a hint of distant blue light peeking through. These little details can make a huge difference in creating an atmospheric and captivating image. The key is to make them feel comfortable, confident, and empowered. I like to play music they enjoy and keep the conversation flowing. The best shots often come when they're not even thinking about the camera – maybe they’re lost in thought, or just genuinely smiling at something we said. It’s about building a connection and letting their personality unfold. Encourage them to bring props that express their hobbies or style, whether it’s a favorite book, a skateboard, or a musical instrument. These personal touches add layers to the narrative of the portrait. And for all the aspiring teenage photographers out there, don't worry too much about having the latest gear. My first truly impactful photos were often taken with just my phone! What matters most is understanding light, composition, and how to connect with your subject. Experiment with angles, play with shadows, and always be on the lookout for unique backdrops. The world around you is full of incredible settings – from urban streets to serene parks. Every location has the potential to become that perfect moody scene or a vibrant backdrop for your next portrait. So grab your camera, find some natural light, and start capturing those unforgettable teen moments!

Photography 101: ISO Explained
ISO is your camera's sensitivity to light. You can change your ISO depending on how much light (and therefore detail) you want your camera to pick up. Be careful in low-light settings though! Higher ISO can introduce grain or noise into your images, which isn't always desirable. It’s all ab
