How to Stick to Your Training Plan

A couple tips on how to stick to your training plan:

1. Progress over perfection

Missed a run? It happens. One missed workout won’t ruin your race. Get back on track the next day and move on. My coach used to say “the next rep is the most important one” - same goes for training days!

2. Remember your WHY

Write down WHY you’re doing this. Pin it where you’ll see it. One of my whys is setting an example for my kids that mom has goals too. What’s yours?

3. Find your accountability

- Join a running group or find a running buddy

- Share your plan with someone who’ll check in

- Post your runs, if you’re comfortable.

The first key point, 'Progress over perfection,' focuses on being kind to yourself when life inevitably interrupts your routine. Missing a workout doesn’t mean failure; instead, it’s a reminder to keep going and prioritize the next opportunity to train. This approach reduces burnout and keeps motivation high, emphasizing consistency over flawless execution. Remembering your "WHY" is essential for long-term adherence. Whether your motivation is setting a positive example for loved ones, improving health, or preparing for a race, writing down and visually placing your reason for training can reinforce your commitment daily. Personalizing your reason helps keep your goals front and center, especially when motivation dips or obstacles appear. Finding accountability complements these strategies by creating external support, which studies show significantly improves adherence to exercise programs. Joining a running group or finding a workout buddy not only helps share the experience but creates social encouragement and gentle pressure to keep up with your commitments. Additionally, sharing your progress online through posts or updates can build a community that celebrates your wins and supports you during tough days. By integrating these mindset shifts — progress over perfection, remembering your why, and finding accountability — you form a solid foundation for maintaining your training plan through ups and downs. This holistic approach addresses both the psychological and social aspects of training, which are critical for developing a sustainable fitness routine. Remember, the "next rep is the most important one," and every step forward counts toward your fitness journey.
