This difference often results in dietary habits that favor whole, natural ingredients and the celebrated Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes healthy fats, vegetables, lean proteins, and unprocessed foods. At universities, the availability and marketing of high-calorie fast foods often contribute to the so-called “freshman 15,” where students experience significant weight gain during their studies. Reflecting on personal experiences, some people from Gen Z can identify how a childhood diet based largely on processed foods has impacted their wellbeing. Transitioning to more nourishing diets can be challenging but beneficial, as seen in the adoption of Mediterranean eating patterns that improve both physical and mental health. To address these concerns, conversations about fast food’s role, nutrition education, and food policy reforms are necessary. Encouraging awareness about the long-term impact of processed diets and promoting healthier, balanced alternatives can empower Gen Z to take control of their health and break the cycle of processed food dependence. Ultimately, acknowledging the influence of fast food chains like Canes and the cultural normalization of processed foods helps us understand the scope of this health issue. Raising awareness and offering practical solutions can inspire healthier choices for future generations.
