You Don’t Have to Absorb Your Child’s Emotions

If you’re a mom who feels everything your child feels… this isn’t weakness.

It’s wiring.

Many of us learned early that peace depended on us noticing tension before it exploded.

So now when our child is overwhelmed, angry, withdrawn, or reactive, our body reacts too.

But your child’s dysregulation is not proof you’ve failed.

It’s a nervous system moment.

You can:

• stay grounded

• hold boundaries

• care deeply

without carrying the emotional weight of the room.

And this doesn’t just apply to kids.

If you’ve been the emotional regulator in every relationship, this pattern runs deeper than motherhood.

What part hit you most?

Comment 🌻 if this resonated

You don’t have to explain — a 🌻 is enough. Me too. You’re not alone.

If you want to know where to begin, it’s in my bio.

... Read moreAs a parent, I've found that learning to differentiate between my child's emotions and my own reactions has been transformative. Early on, I used to instinctively absorb every small upset my child experienced, leaving me drained and anxious. I realized this was partly due to my nervous system responding as if I were in danger when witnessing their distress. One practical approach that helped me was practicing grounding techniques whenever I sensed an emotional spike. Before responding to my child's frustration or sadness, I would drop my shoulders, unclench my jaw, slow my breathing, and feel my feet firmly planted on the ground. This simple act of physical awareness helped me stay present without becoming overwhelmed. I also learned the importance of holding clear emotional boundaries. For example, when my child showed signs of withdrawal or defiance, I reminded myself that these are nervous system moments, not personal failures or emergencies that I need to fix immediately. This mindset allowed me to care deeply while maintaining my own emotional stability. Empathy became a more balanced practice for me too. Instead of saying, "I need to solve this so I can feel okay," I started telling myself, "I understand you're overwhelmed," recognizing the difference between healthy awareness and emotional enmeshment. This approach extends beyond parenting. Whether in relationships with partners, friends, or colleagues, recognizing when someone else's emotions are not our emotional emergencies helps maintain our own well-being. It's a cyclebreaker — a way to heal generational patterns of over-responsibility for others' feelings. In my experience, embracing these practices has brought peace and resilience into my family dynamics. It's empowering to know that I can hold space for my child's emotions without carrying the emotional weight myself. For moms navigating the complexity of nervous system regulation and gentle parenting, these tools create a path toward healing and stronger connections.
