It Wasn’t Self-Sabotage — It Was Familiarity

Not everything I called

“self-sabotage”

was actually me trying to ruin something.

Sometimes

nothing was wrong.

But peace felt so unfamiliar

that my body kept scanning

for a problem.

I would overthink tone.

Read into energy.

Feel the need to fix something.

Bring up tension

when there wasn’t actually tension there.

Not because I wanted chaos.

Because chaos felt familiar.

That’s the part

so many people carry shame around.

But shame usually keeps the pattern hidden.

Gentle honesty is what helps it soften.

Sometimes healing looks like noticing

you’re trying to create movement

because stillness feels unsafe.

And learning

little by little

that peace does not have to be interrupted

just because it feels new.

Comment 🌻 if this resonated

What’s one way this has shown up for you?

If you want to know where to begin, it’s in my bio.

... Read moreFrom personal experience, I’ve noticed that the hardest part about embracing peace is simply how unfamiliar it feels. Many of us unconsciously cling to tension or recreate conflict without realizing it, because chaos has become a kind of comfortable baseline in our nervous system. This isn’t about wanting turmoil, but about seeking safety in what we know. One technique that helped me was mindfulness combined with self-compassion. When I caught myself overthinking tones or reading negative energy where none existed, I paused to acknowledge these thoughts without judgment. Instead of trying to fix everything immediately, I learned to sit with the discomfort of stillness, reminding myself that peace doesn’t have to be interrupted just because it’s new or different. Another important insight was understanding the role of generational and nervous system healing. Often, our patterns of creating tension are inherited or learned responses that our bodies default to during perceived uncertainty. By practicing nervous system calming strategies, such as deep breathing and grounding exercises, I gradually untangled the link between chaos and safety. Healing also involved gentle honesty, both with myself and others, which softened long-held shame that kept these patterns hidden. Sharing my experiences with supportive communities and identifying as a 'cyclebreaker' empowered me to change my relationship with familiar discomfort. If you relate to this struggle, remember that growth is a process. Healing happens little by little. Recognizing that familiar chaos is not self-sabotage but a nervous system response can be incredibly freeing. It opens the door to building new, healthier patterns that embrace peace as a true form of safety, not something to fear or interrupt.
