5 Reasons Moms Struggle With Identity

It is not a secret that moms struggle with loss of identity. A quick search on Google will give you statistics on just how common this is, and how often it is reported.

There are a myriad of reasons why this is becoming even more of a problem than it used to be, and my post does not touch on all of them. I’m aware of that. I am also aware that some people may disagree with me, and that’s ok. Some may become defensive- that’s also ok.

If even one person reads this and feels seen, validated, or less alone, then it has reached its goal.

You are not alone. You matter. You are worthy. YOU. And if you feel like you don’t even know who are you anymore, that’s ok. I invite you to get to know yourself, and what a pleasure it will be.

... Read moreMany moms feel a profound loss of identity after embracing motherhood, deeply influenced by societal expectations. The pressure to prioritize family often results in sacrificing personal goals and experiences. As motherhood becomes synonymous with self-worth, women may unintentionally blur the lines between themselves and their children’s achievements. This intertwining of identities can lead to feelings of inadequacy, especially when faced with constant judgments from society, family, and peers. One significant factor is the overwhelming amount of information available today about parenting, which contributes to a hyper-personalized approach. Moms are bombarded with various ideologies, creating additional stress when they feel judged for their choices. Moreover, validation often feels scarce. As mothers navigate their responsibilities, they may not receive the acknowledgment they deserve, making them defensive when questioned about their parenting decisions. Consequently, these emotional challenges are at the root of what some refer to as the 'mommy wars,' leading many mothers to feel isolated in their struggles. Recognizing these issues is crucial in addressing the mental health aspects of motherhood. Open conversations about identity and self-worth can foster community and support among mothers. By focusing on personal identity apart from motherhood and valuing individual contributions to family life, women can begin to reclaim their sense of self. It's essential to remember that every mom's journey is unique, and there are resources available to guide them through this transitional phase.
