Book Review: You and Me Forever 💛

It’s time for another review! 🤓 Written by Francis and Lisa Chan, “You and Me Forever: Marriage in the Light of Eternity” is a short but compelling read for any Christian considering marriage. Admittedly, I don’t know very much about Francis Chan, but I think it’s awesome that he was able to collaborate with his wife on this book 👏

At the heart of this book is the idea that marriage is — shocker — not all about the two people in it 🤯 Ultimately, it is about our relationship with God and our mission. Problems arise when we focus so much on ourselves and our spouse that we forget the Lord 😓 We forget that, from His perspective, our time (and our marriage) on this Earth is but a little blip in the grand timeline of eternity ♾️

I agree with most of what the Chans write about, especially as it confirms other biblically based things I have read/heard in premarital counseling. While I may differ from them slightly in doctrine, even that difference doesn’t detract from the overall message.

👉 So what is the point of marriage? How important is our family compared to God? What happens when there is no more marriage in Heaven? What is our responsibility to our spouse and our kids? What are some practical ways we can realign our family on the mission? You’ll find thought-provoking discussions on these topics and more in this slim volume (and apparently some companion videos by the Chans!).

⭐️Overall rating: 4.5/5, would recommend!

... Read moreReading 'You and Me Forever' really made me reflect on what marriage is truly about, beyond just the romantic ideal. It’s easy to get caught up in our own happiness, our spouse’s needs, and the daily grind, forgetting the much bigger picture. The Chans so powerfully remind us that our marriage, our family, and indeed our entire lives, are meant to point back to God and His eternal mission. One of the most profound takeaways for me was the idea, beautifully highlighted in the book, that our love for God should be in a completely different category – far beyond our love for family, even. This isn't about loving our spouse *less*; it's about anchoring our deepest affections and ultimate devotion in God first. When God is truly number one, it reorders everything else in a way that paradoxically strengthens our marital bond. It means that when disagreements arise, or when our spouse inevitably falls short (as we all do!), our foundation isn't shaken because our ultimate security isn't in them, but in Him. I've personally found that when I prioritize my walk with God, I'm a more patient, loving, and understanding partner. The book also touches on the concept of biblical roles in marriage, emphasizing that loving a spouse as Christ loved the church isn't just a quaint idea—it’s an incredibly challenging call to sacrificial love. It's not about rigid rules, but about a deep, self-giving commitment that goes far beyond mere words. It means actively seeking the good of your partner, even when it's inconvenient, even when you don't feel like it. This kind of love, I've learned, can only truly flow when you are filled by God's love first. It's a daily choice to die to self and serve, mirroring Christ's example. Another key point that resonated deeply was the advice to seek our deepest desires from God, rather than placing that immense burden on our spouse. We often look to our partners to fulfill every emotional, spiritual, and even practical need, leading to disappointment. The Chans wisely guide us to examine our walk with God first when issues arise in our relationships. Is God truly our ultimate promise keeper? Are we running to Him for fulfillment, peace, and joy before we demand it from our husband or wife? This shift in perspective can alleviate so much pressure and allow our spouse to simply be the wonderful, imperfect human they are, rather than an idol we expect to complete us. Ultimately, 'You and Me Forever' encourages us to adopt a 'blueprint for marriage' where being overwhelmed by Christ's care naturally leads to extravagant love for one's spouse. It’s a powerful reminder that mediocrity isn't just acceptable, it's often shocking in its lack of impact. This book isn't just about surviving marriage; it's about thriving in it by living out a purpose much grander than ourselves. It makes you think about how your marriage can be a testament to God's love and a tool for His mission. If you're looking for profound insights to transform your relationship, this book is a must-read!
