🇺🇸 States I've been to!

I've been WAITING for Lemon8 to make this activity easier! 🥹 And they delivered!! 👏 It's cool to think I've been to almost half the states. Here are some personal factoids about my favorites:

🤠 TEXAS

I've been living here for nearly 7 years! Specifically between Dallas and rural East Texas. I've grown and developed so much out here, thanks to a fulfilling job, affordable living, a life-changing grad school experience and an ✨amazing✨ church community!

🏝️ CALIFORNIA

I've been to LA many times because that's where my long-distance fiancé lives! 🥲 I also worked in the Bay Area for a bit, fresh out of college. Now that I'm so used to the Southern small town life, the large cities in California can be a bit much. But the climate is so nice, and there are some incredible eats out there! 😋

👧🏻 PENNSYLVANIA

My old stomping grounds! I did my K-12 here, basically in Pittsburgh. So many memories... I miss the rolling hills and trees in the fall. I haven't been back here since my parents moved to a different state, but I'd love to return someday.

🍎 NEW YORK

Talk about big cities... I interned in Manhattan for a summer, and that was enough for me lol 😅 But now I go back every once in a while to visit my little sis, who lives outside the city. The Met is probably my favorite art museum of all time 🖼️ And of course, great food here too!

🎨 RHODE ISLAND

I went to college in Providence, and it really changed my life completely! The education itself was...a little wanting...but this is where I found my passion for graphic design, where I accepted Christ, and where I met the love of my life 🥰

This was so much fun! I hope Lemon8 does more interactive activities like this in the future 🍋💛

... Read moreIt's so fascinating to reflect on the different US states I've had the privilege to visit and experience firsthand. When you travel or even live in a place, you quickly realize that while common perceptions, or what some might call "stereotypes," exist, the reality is often far more complex and personal. My journeys across nearly half the US have definitely given me a unique lens through which to view these popular ideas. Take Texas, for example. The immediate images for many are cowboys, ranches, and a "bigger is better" mentality. Having lived here for nearly seven years, primarily in the Dallas area and rural East Texas, I can confirm the spirit of grandiosity and hospitality. But it's also incredibly diverse! Dallas is a bustling metropolis with a vibrant arts scene, while East Texas offers a completely different, serene, and tight-knit community feel. It's not just a monolithic "country" state; it's a tapestry of different lifestyles, all under that big Texas sky. My experience here has truly shown me how much a place can shape your life. Then there's California. Often, people imagine the glitz of Hollywood, the tech innovation of Silicon Valley, or the laid-back beach vibe. Having visited LA numerous times and worked in the Bay Area right after college, I've seen these facets. The sheer scale and pace of its major cities can indeed be "a bit much" when you're used to a smaller-town feel, but the climate is undeniable, and the culinary scene is out of this world! What's interesting is how distinct different parts of California are; the Bay Area's innovative energy is a world away from LA's entertainment focus, and neither fully captures the state's natural beauty or diverse cultures. My old stomping grounds in Pennsylvania also bring up interesting points. Many might think of it as an "East Coast industrial state" or focus on its historical significance. Growing up in Pittsburgh, I remember the beautiful rolling hills and vibrant fall foliage, a far cry from a purely industrial image. While cities like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia have their unique urban identities, the state also offers immense natural beauty and quaint, charming towns. The stereotype often misses the nuanced blend of history, nature, and evolving urban centers. And New York! The stereotype of a fast-paced, always-on Manhattan is certainly real. My summer internship there was an intense, unforgettable experience. But New York isn't just Manhattan. Visiting my sister outside the city, I've seen a different side, a more serene yet equally cultural experience. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, for instance, enriches the city beyond its hustle. It's a state that offers everything from iconic cityscapes to tranquil upstate retreats, proving you can't pigeonhole it into one single idea. Finally, Rhode Island, my college state. As the smallest state, it sometimes gets overlooked, or perhaps associated purely with Ivy League academics due to Providence. While my education experience had its ups and downs, Providence itself was a crucible for personal growth. It's where I discovered my passion for graphic design, found my faith, and met significant people in my life. It shows that even the smallest states can hold the biggest life-changing moments, far beyond any simple stereotype. What I've learned from exploring these "visited favorites" and so many other states (making up about 44% of the US!) is that stereotypes are often just tiny fragments of a much larger, more intricate picture. They can serve as starting points, but true understanding comes from personal engagement. Every state has its own unique character and hidden gems. The best way to truly know a place and challenge those preconceived notions is to experience it yourself. So, next time you hear a stereotype, remember there's always more to the story!
