Why I started journaling…

I started to journal back in my freshman year of high school when I was being bullied and tormented for things I couldn’t control. Since that year I have grown into journaling and learned how to do it properly. It’s definitely a great outlet and I would recommend everyone try it.

But through that raw writing process, something incredible happened. I began to identify specific emotions, moving beyond just 'feeling bad' to recognizing anger, sadness, or even anxiety. It was like giving a name to the storm inside, which immediately made it feel less overwhelming. This practice taught me to sit with my feelings, understand their origins, and eventually, process them in a healthy way instead of letting them fester. It’s a remarkable way to gain clarity and prevent emotions from bottling up, leading to healthier mental well-being. Beyond just expressing emotions, I discovered that journaling became an unexpected boost for my overall writing skills. When you write without the pressure of an audience or a grade, you're free to experiment with words, phrases, and structures. I found myself trying to articulate complex feelings with more precision, which naturally expanded my vocabulary. There are no 'wrong' words in a journal; it's a playground for your thoughts where you can truly develop your unique voice. This uninhibited practice polished my ability to construct coherent narratives, even if they were just for my own eyes. It strengthened my personal storytelling, making it easier to communicate clearly and effectively in other areas of my life too, whether it's an email, a presentation, or just a conversation. It's funny how a private act of self-reflection can have such public benefits! For anyone considering starting their own journaling journey for emotional expression or even just to improve their writing, my biggest advice is to just start. Don't worry about perfect handwriting, grammar, or having profound thoughts every time. Some days, I just list things I'm grateful for, or brain dump everything swirling in my head. Other days, I use prompts like 'What made me smile today?' or 'What's one thing I can let go of?' There's no right or wrong way to do it. You can use a fancy notebook, a simple spiral, or even a digital app. The key is consistency, even if it's just five minutes a day. It’s truly a low-barrier, high-reward habit that offers so much more than just a place to jot down notes. It's not just about documenting your life; it's about actively shaping your inner world, understanding yourself better, fostering self-compassion, and finding a sense of calm amidst life's chaos. Trust me, your future self will thank you for this incredible gift of self-connection and personal growth. It’s an investment in your well-being that pays dividends.
