My recent piece, the colorful space buns drawing you see, just reminded me how much joy a vibrant drawing can bring, especially when you play with a bold palette. If you're looking for some serious colorful drawing inspo, let me share a few thoughts on how I find my spark and make those colors pop! One of my favorite ways to kickstart a colorful piece is by simply observing the world around me. I often find myself scrolling through Pinterest or Instagram, saving images of stunning sunsets, exotic birds, or even bold fashion designs. These visual cues are fantastic for getting those creative juices flowing. Think about the wild, colorful hair trends you see, or unique makeup looks – they can be incredible starting points for character designs, just like the bold makeup and freckles on my latest drawing. Don't be afraid to mix and match elements you love! When it comes to making colors truly sing, especially on a unique surface, black paper is a game-changer. It provides such a dramatic contrast that every hue seems to glow. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend grabbing a black paper sketchbook. It totally transforms how you approach color. For my drawing, I used acrylic markers, which lay down such opaque and brilliant color. Experimenting with different mediums is key! Watercolors, colored pencils, or even pastels can all look stunning on black paper if you pick the right kind. Another tip for creating truly colorful drawings is to think about your color palette. You don't need a million colors; sometimes, a limited but well-chosen palette can be incredibly impactful. Consider complementary colors (like blue and orange, or purple and yellow) to create maximum contrast and vibrancy. Or, for a harmonious feel, try analogous colors (colors next to each other on the color wheel). With my space buns character, I loved playing with contrasting blues and pinks for the hair and face, making her really stand out. Don't let the idea of perfection hold you back.
