DAY IN MY LIFE: COLLEGE TENNIS🎾👟
Living the college tennis life is definitely a balancing act, and I wanted to share a bit more about how I make it all work, especially on a busy game day! You saw my quick Keurig coffee grab, but fueling up properly is absolutely key. For that team lunch, I usually aim for something balanced like the turkey jalapeno crunch and soup, ensuring I get protein and complex carbs without feeling too heavy right before a match. Those chips on the side are a little treat, but generally, I'm quite careful with heavily processed foods or too much sugar before playing. Hydration is also huge – I'm constantly sipping water throughout the day, not just during the match itself. Electrolyte drinks are my best friend for replenishing what I lose on the court. After the adrenaline of the match, it's easy to want to crash, but there's often more to do! That post-match trip to grab a 4 dollar biggie bag from Wendy's is sometimes a necessary reward and quick refuel after burning so many calories, but I also try to make sure I've got a healthier, more substantial meal planned for when I get back to the dorm. It's all about finding that balance between treating yourself and giving your body what it truly needs to recover and be ready for the next challenge. Then comes the academic side – like you saw, I often have to hit the books even after a long game day. It’s not always easy, but I've learned a few essential tricks. Planning my study time in advance is absolutely crucial, even allocating specific hours on game days. Sometimes I'll use travel time on the bus for quick review, or dedicate a consistent block of time each evening, no matter how tired I am. Surprisingly, doing some laundry or tidying my space really calms me down and helps me transition from athlete mode to student mode. My professors are usually understanding if I communicate my schedule proactively, but ultimately, it's my responsibility to keep up with assignments and readings. Another thing I've found super helpful is having a consistent pre-match routine beyond just the physical warm-up. This includes listening to my favorite pump-up playlist, visualizing key plays, and doing some deep breathing or a short meditation. It helps me get into the right mental mindset for today's match and focus on the task at hand. The support from my teammates during our little team lunch and throughout the match is also invaluable – we really push each other. And after the match, a good cool-down and stretching session, sometimes even an ice bath, is non-negotiable to prevent soreness and get my body ready for the next practice session. Being a student athlete means every day is packed, but the camaraderie with my team, the personal growth, and the thrill of competing makes it all worth it. It’s a unique experience that teaches you so much about time management, discipline, and resilience, skills that go far beyond the tennis court. Hope this gives you a deeper look into what it's really like!
