Budget MY $2.5k Pay in August with me

Hi friends,

time to budget august with me 🧾! I’m 24, living in LA, currently working as a marketing intern and bringing in $2.5k/month. saving is def important, but I still like to set aside $250 for fun—think skincare, the occasional cute outfit, or a weekend out with friends. tbh i haven’t been shopping much lately, so most of this will go toward eating out and little adventures 🥲 someone recently told me i should try more affordable restaurants, and i think they’re right—i’m gonna try to take that advice!

My grocery budget is tiny this month—just ¥160—bc i’m eating lighter and trying to pack in more veggies 🥬 I've also been cutting back on my daily coffee + matcha runs, aiming to keep my drink budget under $25… or just make them at home (sad but smart lol).

Now for the boring-but-essential stuff: 🏠my rent + utilities come to $1.6k. ⛽️Gas for commuting (i fill up ~2x/month) is budgeted at $65. i might look into carpooling to lower that 👀

All in all,I’m aiming to keep my total spend under $2.1k this month. any tips or hidden LA gems to help stretch it further?

... Read moreManaging a monthly budget of $2,500 in a high-cost city like Los Angeles requires strategic planning and smart spending choices. With rent and utilities taking up $1,600 of the budget, it's essential to be mindful of other expenses such as groceries, transportation, and leisure activities to avoid overspending. A grocery budget of around $160, as highlighted, is quite modest, especially with a focus on eating lighter and healthier by incorporating more vegetables. Meal prepping and cooking at home not only supports better nutrition but also cuts down significantly on food costs compared to eating out regularly. Additionally, replacing frequent coffee and matcha runs with homemade alternatives can save around $25 a month or more, contributing to overall savings. Transportation is another critical budget item, with $65 allocated for gas. Exploring options like carpooling, public transit, or cycling can further reduce commuting expenses. LA's extensive public transport system and ride-share opportunities offer practical alternatives that are not only budget-friendly but environmentally considerate. For entertainment and personal expenses, earmarking $250 allows for some leisure without compromising financial goals. Prioritizing affordable dining experiences, finding local events, or enjoying free outdoor activities can maintain social life without stretching the budget. To optimize such a budget, tracking spending regularly using budgeting apps can help identify unnecessary expenditures, making adjustments easier. Utilizing coupons, discounts, and loyalty programs further stretches every dollar spent. Setting a total monthly spending target below $2,100 from a $2,500 income encourages consistent savings, which is vital for financial security and unexpected costs. Staying disciplined with spending on essentials and seeking creative ways to enjoy life affordably ensures a balanced, fulfilling lifestyle in Los Angeles.

There’s an app called TooGoodToGo (leftover meals from restaurants at end of day) that are half price , also try using public transportation or rent a bike or scooter. , go for kid size meals @ chipotle or chic fil a . Use the apps for more discount or free items. (I just moved here and Ive found some pretty descently priced stores here (Amazon fresh) and I think Trader Joe’s isn’t too bad . Also try the Turo app (rent someone else’s car, at a discounted price, maybe try an electric one?) depending on your price range or how close to your work office you are the beach is free entertainment . That’s all I can think of for now, I am still LearNing new hacks too! But thought I’d share a few for you as a fellow “Angeleno” ❤️

Definitely car pool but safely, save the leftovers from your office job if they have free lunch/leftover lunches from meetings (dinner or lunch for the next day), drink more water bc it'll fill you up more (also for health), and drink coffee at the office.
