... Read moreLife as an OR nurse is incredibly rewarding, but it's also demanding, with long hours and unexpected challenges. Over time, I’ve learned that being truly prepared for anything extends beyond my skills and knowledge – it also means having a well-stocked locker. My locker isn’t just a place to stash my bag; it’s my personal survival kit, ensuring I can tackle a 10-hour shift feeling fresh, safe, and ready for whatever comes my way.
First up, let’s talk about hygiene and self-care saviors. My hands used to get so dry and cracked from constant washing and sanitizing. Finding an intensive hand balm that’s non-sticky with just a faint, pleasant smell has been a game-changer. It’s a small luxury that makes a huge difference in my comfort throughout the day. And let's be real, shared locker rooms mean shared facilities. That before-you-go toilet spray designed to trap odors? Absolute genius for maintaining discretion and freshness. Plus, I always keep a travel-sized toiletry kit packed with mini shampoo, conditioner, lotion, deodorant, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss picks. It’s perfect for freshening up mid-shift or feeling human again if an unexpected overnight stay happens.
Next, staying ready for anything is key. You can never have too many medical trauma shears. I keep two pairs – one black and one pink – because they have a mysterious way of disappearing! They're absolutely essential for quick access during emergencies. Eye protection is also non-negotiable. Whether it’s a stylish leopard print frame or a clear blue one, my protective eyewear shields my eyes from potential splashes and keeps me safe. And don't even get me started on pens! I always stash a pack of retractable gel pens in various pastel colors. They're like gold because pens seem to vanish into thin air! Lastly, a large pile of seamless cotton hair ties in neutral colors is a must. Nothing is more annoying than having hair in your face when you need to focus, so these prevent any mid-shift annoyance.
Fueling up and staying hydrated are crucial for energy. Long shifts mean you're constantly on your feet, so a hydration multiplier electrolyte drink mix is my secret weapon. It provides more than just water, helping me replenish electrolytes and sustain energy. I also keep a few non-perishable snacks like protein bars or nuts to avoid the dreaded mid-afternoon slump. And for us ladies, a multipack of tampons is a definite must-have. You never know when your monthly cycle will decide to surprise you mid-shift, and being prepared saves a lot of stress and discomfort.
Having these essentials in my locker gives me peace of mind. It’s about being prepared, feeling comfortable, and ultimately, being able to provide the best care possible. What are your must-have locker essentials for a long shift?
I worked in the Cath Lab for 10 years… My locker was the same and our bathroom had everything from socks for the summertime when the girls wore sandals to shower caps at anything you could possibly need to possibly shower in there lol
