Big NO NO foods for dogs 🐶

2025/1/25 Edited to

... Read moreHey fellow dog parents! It’s always a worry, isn't it, trying to make sure our fur babies are safe and healthy? I recently had a scare with my own dog, and it made me realize just how many common human foods can be truly dangerous for them. We all want to treat our pups, but sometimes those treats can lead to serious problems like vomiting or even long-term kidney damage. So, I’ve been doing some research and talking to other dog owners, and I want to share what I've learned to help everyone keep their dogs safe. Let's talk about those stomach-churning foods first. You know, the ones that can cause our poor pooches to throw up or have diarrhea. Many of us might not think twice about giving our dog a piece of fruit or a bit of dinner, but some common items are big no-nos. For example, did you know that oranges can cause vomiting and diarrhea because of their acidity and essential oils? It's not just the citrus; even something seemingly harmless like ginger, if given in too large an amount, can actually upset their stomach and lead to vomiting. And while garlic might seem like a healthy addition to human food, for dogs, it's a definite danger. It can cause gastrointestinal upset, leading to vomiting and diarrhea, and in larger quantities, even red blood cell damage. Symptoms like lethargy, pale gums, and increased heart rate could signal a big problem. Then there are the less obvious ones. Tomatoes, especially green ones or the leaves/stems, contain solanine, which can cause severe gastrointestinal upset, weakness, and even heart problems. Even ripe tomatoes should be given in very small amounts, if at all. And if your dog gets into your morning routine, be extra vigilant about coffee. The caffeine is a potent stimulant that can lead to hyperactivity, vomiting, elevated heart rate, and even seizures. Imagine the panic! Mushrooms, particularly wild ones, can be highly toxic, causing anything from vomiting and tremors to liver failure, so always keep an eye out on walks. Now, let's dive into something even more serious: foods that can put a strain on those vital organs, the kidneys. Kidney problems can be silent killers, and early detection or, better yet, prevention, is key. The absolute top of the list here has to be grapes and raisins. They are incredibly toxic to dogs and can cause acute kidney failure, even in small amounts. The exact mechanism isn't fully understood, but the consequences are devastating. Symptoms can include vomiting, lethargy, increased thirst, and decreased urination. If you suspect your dog has eaten even one grape, contact your vet immediately. Another surprisingly harmful fruit is starfruit. While delicious for us, it contains oxalic acid which can bind with calcium in your dog's system, leading to kidney strain and potentially kidney failure. And who would think a little bit of soy sauce could be bad? But the high sodium content can lead to sodium ion poisoning, which severely impacts kidney function and can cause excessive thirst, lethargy, tremors, and even seizures. Even common items like salt in large quantities can cause these issues. It's all about being informed and vigilant. I've learned that even tiny amounts of certain foods can be problematic, and every dog reacts differently. Always check with your vet if you're unsure about giving your dog something new, or if you suspect they've ingested something they shouldn't have. Keeping a safe kitchen and being aware of what's lying around can literally save your dog's life. Remember, a healthy pup is a happy pup!
