Putting Off the Old Woman and Putting On the New

A Bible Study for Women

There was a woman who loved God deeply, but lately she barely recognized herself.

The stress of life had worn her down. Between laundry piled high, children arguing, bills waiting to be paid, and silent disappointments she carried in her heart, she found herself becoming someone she did not want to be. Her words were sharper. Her patience shorter. Her heart heavier.

One morning, after snapping at her family and crying alone in the bathroom afterward, she opened her Bible with trembling hands. She wasn’t looking for a perfect study or a polished answer. She simply whispered:

“Lord… help me.”

Her eyes landed on these verses:

“In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:”

— Colossians 3:7-10 KJV

She read the verses again slowly.

Put off.

The Lord showed her something important that day: salvation is not only about where we are going one day it is about who we are becoming right now.

The Old Woman We Carry

Paul reminded believers that before Christ, they “walked” in sin. That old life once felt natural. Anger, bitterness, gossip, harsh words, pride, and dishonesty were part of the flesh.

Sometimes women carry wounds so long that those wounds begin shaping their reactions.

A woman hurt repeatedly may become hard.

A woman ignored may become bitter.

A woman overwhelmed may lash out.

A woman rejected may hide behind anger.

The “old woman” often speaks from pain rather than peace.

She realized her sharp words were not just exhaustion they were signs that God wanted to heal something deeper inside her heart.

The Lord was not condemning her. He was calling her higher.

Notice the verse says:

“But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.”

— Colossians 3:8 KJV

Putting off something is intentional. Like removing dirty clothing.

God never asks us to carry the old life while wearing the new one.

Sometimes we pray for peace while feeding bitterness.

We pray for healing while replaying offenses.

We pray for God to change others while refusing to surrender ourselves.

The Holy Spirit gently convicts us because He wants freedom for us.

She sat quietly and began writing down the things God was asking her to “put off”:

Harsh reactions

Constant negativity

Secret resentment

Speaking carelessly when emotional

Comparing herself to other women

She cried while writing them down not from shame, but from relief. God was exposing what was hurting her soul.

Then came the hope filled part of the passage:

“And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:”

— Colossians 3:10 KJV

God does not simply remove things from us He replaces them with something new.

The woman God is shaping in you is not ruled by flesh but led by the Spirit.

The new woman:

chooses gentleness over rage,

truth over deception,

grace over cruelty,

forgiveness over bitterness,

wisdom over emotional destruction.

This transformation does not happen overnight. Renewal is daily.

Some mornings She still struggled. Some days she failed. But now when conviction came, she ran toward God instead of away from Him.

Little by little, her home began to change because she was changing.

Not into a perfect woman

but into a renewed one.

Maybe you see parts of the “old woman” still trying to cling to your life.

Perhaps anger has become familiar.

Perhaps bitterness feels justified.

Perhaps your mouth speaks from wounds that never healed.

But sister, Jesus still renews hearts.

He does not merely improve us He transforms us.

The enemy says, “This is just who you are.”

But God says:

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

— 2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV

You are not trapped by your old ways.

You are being renewed in the image of Christ.

Reflection Questions

What attitudes or behaviors has God been asking me to “put off” lately?

Do my words bring life and grace to others, or do they reveal hidden hurt and anger?

Am I allowing God to heal the deeper wounds behind my reactions?

What would it look like for me to “put on the new woman” in my daily life?

How can I surrender my emotions to God instead of letting them control me?

Ending Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving me even when I struggle with my flesh. Thank You for not leaving me bound to the old person I used to be. Lord, show me the areas of my life that need to change. Help me put off anger, bitterness, harsh words, pride, and anything that does not reflect You.

Renew my heart and mind daily. Teach me to speak with grace, respond with wisdom, and walk in love. Heal the hidden wounds inside me that cause sinful reactions. Create in me a clean heart and make me more like Jesus.

When I fail, remind me that Your mercy is new every morning. Thank You for transforming me into a new creation through Christ.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

... Read moreReflecting on this inspiring Bible study, I can personally relate to the challenge of shedding the "old woman"—those ingrained habits and emotional wounds that weigh heavily on us. Life’s daily stresses often make it easy to default to sharp words or impatience, just as the article describes. But truly, this transformation is a gradual, intentional process inspired by faith and reliance on the Holy Spirit. In my own journey, approaching God with honest vulnerability, like the woman who whispered “Lord… help me,” was a turning point. It’s about daily choices to put off anger, bitterness, and harshness—the "dirty clothing" we cling to—and to instead welcome gentleness, forgiveness, and grace. I found that writing down these struggles, much like the study suggests, became a cathartic way to identify areas needing change. The key insight from Colossians 3:10 that resonated was how God doesn’t merely take things away but replaces them with something better—a new self molded after Christ. This reminded me that transformation isn’t about perfection but a renewed heart, shaped by wisdom and love. This process also requires patience and self-compassion. There are days of failure or frustration, but each conviction is an opportunity to run toward God, not away. Surrounding myself with a supportive faith community helped keep me accountable and encouraged. The reflection questions provided are powerful tools for self-examination — asking whether my words build up or reveal hidden hurts, and how I can daily "put on the new woman" by letting go of control over emotions and surrendering them to God. This daily renewal impacted not only my personal peace but also my relationships at home, fostering a more loving environment. For anyone feeling burdened by old habits or wounds, remember that spiritual renewal is a journey, not a one-time event. Trust in God’s transforming power — as 2 Corinthians 5:17 promises, old things pass away and all things become new. Embrace this truth, and step forward into the grace and peace available through Christ.
