The Woman Who Opened Her Heart

A Bible Study for Women: Lydia

The morning air was cool along the riverbank. The water moved gently over the stones while a small group of women gathered to pray. They had come looking for God, carrying the burdens of ordinary life work to be done, homes to manage, decisions to make, and hearts longing for something more.

Among them sat Lydia.

She was not a queen, though she dealt in the colors of royalty. She was not a preacher, yet God would use her life to help establish the church in Europe. She was not introduced as someone's wife or daughter. Scripture simply tells us her name, her work, and her faith.

Many women today understand Lydia's world. Some carry the responsibilities of businesses and careers. Others manage homes, gardens, meals, children, finances, or aging parents. Some quietly serve without recognition. Many seek God while faithfully carrying the ordinary duties of life.

Lydia's story reminds us that God often meets women not in palaces or temples, but in the middle of everyday life.

The Bible introduces Lydia this way:

Acts 16:14 KJV

“And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.”

Purple cloth was expensive and associated with wealth, nobility, and honor. Lydia was a businesswoman who traded valuable goods. She likely understood long days, responsibilities, financial concerns, and the pressure of providing for herself and her household.

God did not ask Lydia to become someone else before He called her. He met her exactly where she was.

Many women wonder if their daily responsibilities matter to God. The meals prepared, the floors cleaned, the gardens tended, the bills paid, the jobs worked, the animals cared for, the errands run, and the countless unseen acts of service can seem ordinary.

Yet Scripture says:

"Colossians 3:23-24 KJV

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; [24] Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”

Your work matters because the Lord sees it.

Acts tells us something beautiful:

"Whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul." — Acts 16:14 (KJV)

Lydia listened because God opened her heart.

Many women carry wounded hearts, distracted hearts, anxious hearts, exhausted hearts, or guarded hearts. Responsibilities can crowd out quiet moments with God. Worry can make it difficult to hear His voice.

Yet God still opens hearts.

Jesus said:

"Revelation 3:20 KJV

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”

God does not force His way into our lives. He gently calls us to listen, trust, and receive His truth.

Perhaps the Lord is opening your heart today to His love, His correction, His peace, His calling, or His presence.

After Lydia believed, Scripture says:

"Acts 16:15 KJV

And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.”

Lydia's faith did not remain private. It touched her household.

Women often carry tremendous influence within their homes. Whether married or single, mothers or grandmothers, daughters or wives, women frequently shape the spiritual atmosphere of the places where they live.

The Bible says:

"Proverbs 14:1 KJV

Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.”

Building a home is not merely decorating rooms or completing chores. It is building an atmosphere of peace, prayer, kindness, forgiveness, and faith.

Your home does not have to be perfect to become a place where Christ is welcomed.

After Paul and Silas were imprisoned and later released, Scripture says:

"Acts 16:40 KJV

And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.”

Lydia opened her home to God's people.

Hospitality is not perfection. It is making room.

Some women hesitate to invite others in because the house is messy, the furniture is old, the meal is simple, or life feels chaotic.

Yet Scripture teaches:

"1 Peter 4:9 KJV

Use hospitality one to another without grudging.”

Hospitality may look like sharing coffee with a friend, offering encouragement, cooking a meal, opening your table, praying with someone, or simply making others feel welcomed.

Lydia's home became a place of encouragement and fellowship because she opened her door.

Lydia was already worshipping God when Paul found her at the riverside.

Jesus said:

"Matthew 6:33 KJV

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Modern life constantly demands attention. There are dishes to wash, laundry to fold, appointments to keep, animals to feed, gardens to tend, jobs to work, and endless distractions.

Yet Lydia reminds us that women who seek God will find Him.

A few quiet moments with Scripture, prayer while washing dishes, worship during chores, or speaking with God while tending a garden can become sacred spaces where the Lord meets us.

Lydia may have considered herself an ordinary woman a merchant attending prayer beside a river.

Yet God saw more.

He saw a heart ready to receive truth.

He saw a home that would shelter believers.

He saw a woman whose faith would help establish His church.

The Lord still uses ordinary women.

Women who cook meals.

Women who clean homes.

Women who work outside the home.

Women who care for family members.

Women who feel unnoticed.

Women who quietly seek Him.

"2 Chronicles 16:9 KJV

For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.”

God is still looking for women like Lydia.

Reflection Questions

What responsibilities in your daily life feel unseen or unimportant?

In what areas of your heart may God be inviting you to trust Him more fully?

How can your home become a place of peace, encouragement, and faith?

Are there people God may be calling you to encourage or welcome?

What practical step can you take this week to seek God first?

Which part of Lydia's story speaks most deeply to your current season of life?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the example of Lydia. Thank You that You see women in the ordinary places of life and call them into Your greater story. Open our hearts as You opened Lydia's heart. Help us to hear Your voice above the noise and busyness of life.

Teach us to honor You in our work, our homes, our relationships, and our daily responsibilities. Help us to use what You have given us our gifts, our homes, our time, and our resources for Your glory.

Give us hearts that seek You first. Fill our homes with peace, kindness, and faith. Strengthen us when we are weary and remind us that no act of service done for You is ever wasted.

May we become women who welcome Your presence, encourage others, and faithfully follow where You lead.

"In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” - Proverbs 3:6 KJV

In Jesus' name, Amen.

... Read moreReflecting on Lydia's story, I am reminded that faith is not confined to grand moments or places, but often takes root in the everyday. Like Lydia, many women juggle multiple roles—whether managing a business, caring for family, or balancing work and home life—and may sometimes feel unnoticed or overwhelmed. What strikes me most about Lydia is how God met her right where she was, affirming that no act, no matter how routine it seems, is insignificant in His eyes. In my own experience, seeking God in the middle of busy days—whether during simple tasks like washing dishes or while taking a quiet moment with Scripture—has brought a sense of peace and purpose. Lydia's openness to God's call and her willingness to open her home resonate deeply, reminding me that hospitality is about making room for others, not perfection. Inviting a friend for coffee or offering encouragement can be a profound spiritual service, just as Lydia's home became a refuge for early believers. The biblical encouragement to "do all as to the Lord" (Colossians 3:23-24) encourages me to honor everyday work as sacred. Lydia's example reassures us that women, regardless of their societal status or the visibility of their contributions, play an essential role in God's plan. Her faith not only transformed her life but also influenced her household and community, showing the ripple effect of a heart opened by God. For women today, Lydia's story is an invitation to trust that God values our ordinary moments and is actively working through our faithfulness in daily duties. It encourages us to nurture homes filled with peace and prayer, to embrace hospitality with grace, and to seek God first amid life’s distractions. Ultimately, Lydia reminds us that God’s eyes run to and fro, looking for hearts perfect toward Him—women who quietly serve, welcome, and lead by faith.
