I Have Mastered the Everything Shower 🍑🫧🧖‍♀️

As a gym girl, the everything shower transcends mere hygiene—it's a holistic self-care ritual designed to rejuvenate both my body and mind after a long workout. From lymphatic drainage massages to luxurious post-shower masking, each step is crafted to maintain clear, soft skin and luscious hair, even amidst daily workouts.

Let’s start off with how soon you should be showering 🧼

It's ideal to shower as soon as possible after a gym session, ideally within 30 minutes to an hour. Waiting too long to shower after working out can have several negative effects on your body and can be what’s causing your breakouts!

🦠Bacterial buildup: Sweat, dirt, and bacteria accumulate on the skin's surface during exercise. If left for too long, this buildup can clog pores, leading to acne breakouts and skin infections.

🦠Increased risk of skin irritation: Delayed showering allows sweat to linger on the skin, leading to irritation and inflammation. This can exacerbate existing skin conditions like eczema or dermatitis.

🦠Body odor: Sweat contains bacteria that produce body odor when left on the skin for an extended period. Prompt showering helps eliminate odor-causing bacteria, keeping you feeling fresh.

🦠Risk of fungal infections: Gym equipment and locker rooms are breeding grounds for fungi like athlete's foot and ringworm. Showering promptly after the gym reduces the risk of fungal infections by washing away sweat and bacteria.

🦠Temperature regulation: Showering helps regulate body temperature after a workout, especially if you've been exercising vigorously. Cooling down your body can prevent overheating and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

🚿🫧🧼Now let’s dive into my shower routine! 🧼🫧🚿

🧑‍🎨Step 1: Preparing the Canvas

Before showering, I like to indulge in pre-shower treatments to awaken the senses and prime my body for pampering. I start by dry brushing with a classic bristled brush or the De La Heart Body Tool, not only does it exfoliates the skin but also helps stimulate my lymphatic drainage, but I believe it has helped with bloating and promoting a more radiant complexion.

🚿 Step 2: To achieve the perfect shave

🧽Prep the Skin: Before shaving, it's essential to soften the hair and hydrate the skin. I start with a warm shower or bath 🛁 . This helps open up my pores and soften my hair, making it easier to shave. Then I use a body scrub and a Loofah / shower glove with First Aid Beauty's KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub which targets rough patches, helping with Keratosis pilaris for silky smooth skin.

🪒Choose the Right Razor: For a smooth shave, I opt for a high-quality razor with multiple blades. I like to look for a razor with a pivoting head and a moisturizing strip to help glide smoothly over the skin and reduce irritation.

🧴Apply Conditioner: Instead of traditional shaving cream, I use conditioner as a shaving lubricant. Conditioner is hydrating and provides a smooth surface for the razor to glide over. (I don’t like to use shaving cream because I’ve noticed it dries out my skin and causes skin irritation.) I like to apply a generous amount of conditioner to the area I plan to shave, ensuring even coverage.

🌾Shave with the Grain: When shaving, always go with the direction of hair growth (known as shaving with the grain). This helps prevent irritation and ingrown hairs. Use gentle, steady strokes, and rinse the razor frequently to prevent clogging.

🌧️Rinse and Reapply: After shaving a small area, rinse the razor and reapply conditioner as needed. This ensures a smooth, comfortable shave and helps maintain hydration throughout the process.

🧖‍♀️Post-Shave Care: After shaving, I rinse my skin with cool water ❄️ to close the pores and soothe any irritation. Pat my skin dry gently with a clean towel, avoiding rubbing, which can cause further irritation. Follow up with a moisturizing lotion or oil to hydrate my skin and prevent dryness. (See step 7)

🍼Optional: Baby Oil: For an extra smooth finish, I like to apply a thin layer of baby oil to my shaved areas after rinsing off the conditioner, I’ll sometimes just use baby oil or I’ll combine baby oil with my favorite skin butter. Baby oil helps lock in moisture and leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth. I like to massage the oil into my skin until fully absorbed.

🎭Step 3: Multi-Masking Marvel (done after shaving but not before lotion)

I love to elevate my shower routine with a trio of pre-shower masks, for this step I’ve been using the Pattern's Transition Mask to revive dry strands and Kora Organics mask for a radiant complexion. You don’t have to use these products, find masks that work for your skin type and start layering to help nourished skin and hydrated hair.

🎀Step 4: Oils & Shampoo

I start my hair routine by massaging my oils into my scalp before shampooing to help moisturizer my scalp and hair, reducing frizz, and preventing breakage and split ends.

🥥I use coconut for deep conditioning and adding shine by applying it generously to my dry hair from roots to ends. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes or overnight for a deeper treatment before shampooing and conditioning.

🫒Olive oil as a rich in antioxidants and can help with dandruff, scalp irritation and hair loss. I like to massage olive oil into the scalp and hair before shampooing, focusing on areas prone to dandruff or scalp irritation. Leave it on for 30 minutes to an hour before washing it out.

✨Tips✨

✅I like to use coconut oil and olive oil separately or interchangeably, depending on my current hair needs and preferences. Both oils offer unique benefits, so you can experiment to see which works best for you or even combine them for a customized treatment.

ℹ️For example, you might use coconut oil for deep conditioning and shine one week and olive oil for scalp health and dandruff the next. Alternatively, you could mix the two oils together for a combined treatment. Adjust your routine based on how your hair responds and what results you're looking to achieve.

🌹 Rosemary oil to help stimulate my hair follicles, promoting hair growth, improving scalp circulation, and maintaining a healthy scalp environment with its antimicrobial properties. I mix a few drops of rosemary oil with a carrier oil like jojoba, almond oil or just my shampoo and massage the mixture into my scalp. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes or overnight for deeper penetration before shampooing.

✅I also use this treatment 2-3 times a week with with a carrier oil, or I will make my own rosemary water and spray it into my hair.

🚿I then double cleanse my hair to rid it of week-long product buildup, starting with a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo like Michiru to deeply cleanse without stripping moisture. Follow up with my Redken's All Soft Shampoo to restore hydration, balances PH, ensuring my hair remains soft and manageable.

🫧Step 5: Conditioning and Exfoliating

To achieve the best smelling and softest hair I use Rahua's Hydration Conditioner infuses locks with mango-scented moisture or Redken 💗

🧖‍♀️Step 6: Post-Shower Masking Magic

I like to wrap up in a microfiber towel and treat my skin to post-shower masks for an extra dose of hydration and soothing relief. Peach & Lily's Original Glow Sheet Mask imparts a radiant complexion, while Solaris Laboratories NY's Cryo Thermo Reusable Soothing Gel Bead Mask reduces redness and boosts serum absorption.

🧴Step 7: Layering Luxe Body Products

I also embrace the art of skincare layering beyond the face with Saltair's Exotic Pulp AHA Body Lotion and Costa Brazil's Jungle Firming Oil. Together, they create a sensual citrus-resin scent while nourishing skin, leaving it irresistibly smooth and hydrated.

🪮Step 8: Hair After Care

✨After Showering✨

🌰Aragon oil for a lightweight and nourishing treatment, ideal for dry or damaged hair, while almond oil is gentle and suitable for sensitive scalps, providing hydration without weighing the hair down. I apply argan oil to my damp hair after shampooing and conditioning, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends to nourish and hydrate dry my damaged hair.

🌴Jojoba oil, similar to the natural oils produced by the scalp, making it effective for balancing oil production and promoting overall scalp health. I’ll apply jojoba oil to my scalp and hair after showering.

🍯Castor oil for its potential to stimulate hair growth and I use it to address issues like thinning hair. I massage castor oil into my scalp overnight before shampooing and conditioning in the morning.

🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧

✨How to Rotate your hair oils✨

I feel like I may get this question in the comments so I want to address it now :) Using all the oils every single day is excessive and would weigh down your hair.

❗️I recommend to rotate the oils and use them on different days or as needed based on your hair's condition.

✨Here's my current schedule✨

🫧Monday: Hair washday🚿

✅Coconut Oil (Deep Conditioning and Shine) as a pre-shampoo treatment. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes before washing.

✅Argan Oil (Nourishing Treatment) applied to damp hair after shampooing and conditioning.

🫧Tuesday:

✅Rosemary Oil (Hair Growth and Scalp Health) mixed with a carrier oil for a scalp treatment in the morning. Or rosemary water for a lighter feeling.

✅Jojoba Oil (Scalp Balancing) applied to the scalp and hair with rosemary.

🫧Wednesday:

✅Rosemary Oil / water

✅Castor Oil (Hair Growth) massaged into the scalp before bed and left on overnight.

✅Olive Oil before bed (SMALL DROPS) before bed

🫧Thursday: Hair washday 🚿

✅Coconut Oil (Deep Conditioning and Shine) as a pre-shampoo treatment.

✅Rosemary Oil

✅Argan Oil (Nourishing Treatment) applied to damp hair after shampooing and conditioning.

🫧Friday:

Hair Rest Day💤

🫧Saturday:

✅Jojoba Oil (Scalp Balancing) applied to the scalp.

✅Rosemary Oil

🫧Sunday:

✅Almond Oil (Hydration for Sensitive Scalp) applied to the scalp.

✅Castor Oil (Hair Growth) massaged into the scalp before bed and left on overnight.

Feel free to adjust my schedule based on your hair's needs and how your hair responds to the treatments. It's important to listen to your hair and give it the care it needs without overloading it with too much oil.

It wouldn’t be an everything shower if we didn’t talk about the ✨face!✨

Just a quick tip, here’s how I’ve been layering my skincare

✨Step 1: Cleanser✨

I start by washing my face with a gentle cleanser. This gets rid of dirt, oil, and any other gunk that's built up on your skin. Choose a cleanser that's gentle and won't strip away too much of your skin's natural oils. You'll want to cleanse in the morning and at night, and after sweating a lot.

✨Step 2: Toner✨

If you want to kick things up a notch, use a toner next. It helps to remove any leftover dirt or oil after cleansing, and it can also hydrate your skin and keep its pH balanced.

✨Step 3: Spot Treatment✨

If you've got any pesky pimples or dark spots, now's the time to tackle them with a spot treatment. These products go directly onto problem areas and contain ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to help clear things up.

✨Step 4: Serums✨

Serums are like supercharged treatments that target specific skin concerns. They're lightweight and packed with active ingredients, like vitamin C or niacinamide, to brighten, hydrate, or fight acne.

❗️Also know the list of skincare ingredients that are generally recommended not to mix together:

🚫Vitamin C and niacinamide: They can cancel out each other's effectiveness when used together.

🚫Retinol and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs): Using them together can cause irritation and sensitivity.

🚫Retinol and benzoyl peroxide: Combining these may reduce the effectiveness of both ingredients.

🚫Retinol and vitamin C: Both are potent ingredients, and using them together may cause irritation for some people.

🚫Chemical exfoliants (AHAs/BHAs) and physical exfoliants (scrubs): Over-exfoliation can lead to irritation and damage to the skin barrier.

❗️I am not an expert, please always check with a ✨dermatologist✨ or skincare professional for personalized advice based on your skin type and concerns.

✨Step 5: Retinol and Other Retinoid Treatments✨

If you're using retinol or other retinoid treatments, apply them after your serums. These products help with cell turnover, collagen production, and improving overall skin texture.

✨Step 6: Eye Cream✨

For extra moisture and hydration around your eyes, use an eye cream. It's thicker than other products, so it should go on after your treatments to help it absorb better.

✨Step 7: Moisturizer✨

Next up, moisturize! This step helps lock in all the goodness from your previous products and keeps your skin hydrated and healthy. Choose a moisturizer based on your skin type—whether it's dry, oily, or somewhere in between.

✨Step 8: Face Oils✨

If you need even more moisture, you can add a face oil on top of your moisturizer. This creates a barrier that helps prevent moisture loss and keeps your skin feeling soft and supple.

✨Step 9: Sunscreen✨

Last but definitely not least, don't forget your sunscreen! What’s the point of working on your body if you’re not protecting it from harmful effects caused by the sun? You really wanna have the body of a goddess but the face of an old lady because you never used sunscreen in your 20-30s?

🧠Know how it works:

☀️Sunscreen protects your skin by forming a barrier that absorbs, reflects, or scatters harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. It contains active ingredients that work in different ways:

☀️Chemical filters: These absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin.

☀️Physical blockers: These reflect and scatter UV radiation away from the skin. They typically contain minerals like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Both types of sunscreen protect against UVA and UVB rays, which can cause skin damage, premature aging, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Applying sunscreen regularly and generously helps reduce the harmful effects of UV radiation on your skin.

✨Remember✨, the order of your skincare products matters for absorption and effectiveness, so by understanding the order you’ll be getting the most out of your routine. 💗

✨🫧🚿🥥🍯🍑🧖‍♀️✨🌹🧼🧽🎀🪒🛁🧴💗🫧✨

If you gotten this far you’re literally crazy and I love you. I know my posts are long but this one is a doozy.

I wanted to post this because I’ve been getting a lot of comments and dms about my skin and hair routine so I figured why not just tell you EVERYTHING instead of posting multiple posts or only responding to comments where not everyone will get the info. 💗

If you only take one thing away from this post, please let it be to just ✨shower✨

Showering after every gym session, regardless of sweat levels, is crucial for maintaining skin health and preventing acne. I want to remind you, sweat, along with dirt and bacteria, accumulates on the skin's surface during workouts, clogging pores and leading to breakouts.

❗️Additionally, gym equipment harbors bacteria 🦠 and fungi, which can exacerbate skin conditions. Showering removes these impurities, preventing acne and promoting overall skin hygiene.

Also 💗

I hope that by integrating my shower routine or even just a step or two into your post-gym rituals, you feel rejuvenated, ensuring you feel your absolute best after each workout session.

I've been reading your comments, and believe me, I wish I could respond to each and every one of you. I've noticed many of you expressing nervousness about going to the gym and feeling uncomfortable once there. Some have mentioned concerns about their skin not being up to par, feeling the need to cover up with makeup, and overall discomfort with their bodies, leading to missed workouts or even stopping altogether.

I genuinely hope that by prioritizing self-care before and after your gym visits – and beyond, because self-care is important for everyone, regardless of gym habits – you'll find moments to truly relax, unwind, and appreciate your body. Feeling good overall is key, so I hope this routine helps boost your confidence to keep pursuing your fitness journey or gives you something to look forward to after hitting the gym.

... Read moreAfter an intense gym session, the post-workout routine should prioritize effective hygiene practices to maintain skin clarity and overall health. Timing is crucial; showering within 30 minutes not only helps remove sweat, dirt, and bacteria, but also combats common issues like acne and skin irritation. Opt for products that cater to your specific needs—those with anti-bacterial properties and hydrating ingredients can prevent outbreaks and enhance skin texture. Incorporate practices like lymphatic drainage massage during your shower to promote circulation and reduce bloating, while using an exfoliating scrub to keep skin soft. Additionally, for healthy hair, consider natural oils such as coconut and argan oil that nourish and protect without heaviness. Create a playful and enjoyable showering experience that feels like a daily ritual, focusing on self-care and loves following each gym visit, as this is sure to boost your mood and confidence levels throughout the day. Lastly, remember to include sunscreen in your daily skincare routine to shield your skin from UV damage, keeping it youthful and healthy. By making these small adjustments and adopting a comprehensive approach to post-gym self-care, you can truly master the art of the Everything Shower.
