I’d rather use paint than stain wood

Unpopular opinion:

I’d rather use paint than stain — and here’s why 👇

For this wood table, I mixed Chalky Chicks Lava Cake with a bit of water and topcoat to create a rich, stain-like wash. It gave me the perfect moody finish without the mess or smell of traditional stain 🍫🖌️

Paint is more versatile, way easier to control, and honestly-I think it looks better. Sorry, not sorry.

Would you try this faux stain technique?

... Read moreOkay, so in my original post, I confessed my love for using paint over traditional wood stain – and I know it's an unpopular opinion for some! But let's dive a bit deeper into why this choice often makes sense for DIYers like me, and how you can achieve amazing results too, whether you're team paint or team stain. First off, the big debate: wood stain vs. paint. When I started out, I always thought stain was the 'proper' way to finish wood. It penetrates the wood, enhancing its natural grain and color. This is beautiful for highlighting gorgeous, high-quality wood. However, from my personal experience, traditional staining can be tricky. It's often messy, with spills and drips being a constant worry. And let's not even get started on the fumes! Some stains can have a really strong odor, making ventilation a must, and honestly, sometimes it just gives me a headache. Plus, if you're not careful with application, you can end up with blotchiness, which is super frustrating. It's also less forgiving if you want to change your mind later. On the other hand, paint offers immediate gratification and incredible versatility. For me, the control is a huge factor. Paint sits on top of the wood, creating a solid, opaque color. This means you can completely transform a piece, covering imperfections or outdated finishes. The color options are endless – think black wood stain vs paint or white wood stain vs paint – with paint, you literally have every shade imaginable. It's also generally more durable in terms of surface protection against scratches and moisture, especially with a good topcoat. And clean-up? Usually just soap and water for water-based paints, which is a massive win in my book. Now, about that faux stain technique I mentioned! This is where paint really shines for those who want that stained look without the hassle. What I love about mixing paint with a bit of water and topcoat (like my Lava Cake wash) is that it creates a translucent effect, allowing some of the wood grain to peek through, just like a stain. But it’s so much easier to apply evenly, and you have more control over the intensity. It dries faster, and the smell is minimal compared to oil-based stains. It’s perfect if you're wondering is it better to stain or paint wood furniture and leaning towards paint but still want a natural vibe. What if you already have a stained piece and want a change? Many people ask about paint over stain or painting over stain. Yes, you absolutely can! The key is proper preparation. You'll want to clean the surface thoroughly, lightly sand it to create a 'tooth' for the paint to adhere to, and then prime it. A good primer will block any bleed-through from the old stain and ensure your new paint color goes on smoothly and lasts. This is often a much simpler process than stripping old stain, which can be a huge chore. For those curious about chalky finish spray paint or solid color stain vs paint, paint offers a similar solid, opaque finish. Chalk paint, whether brushed or sprayed, gives that unique matte, distressed look that's incredibly popular. Solid color stain is essentially a paint-like product designed for exterior wood, offering opaque color while still technically being a 'stain' because it's formulated for wood penetration and weather resistance. For indoor furniture, I often find a good quality interior paint with a strong topcoat does the job beautifully and offers more color flexibility. Ultimately, whether you choose wood stain or paint depends on your project goals and personal preference. If you have beautiful, pristine wood that you want to showcase, a traditional stain might be your pick. But if you want a complete color transformation, easier application, less mess, or want to mimic a stain with more control, then paint – especially a DIY faux stain wash – is a fantastic, versatile option that I wholeheartedly recommend. Give it a try, you might just become a paint convert like me!
