Working in geriatric nursing is often a journey filled with immense challenges that many outside the healthcare field might not fully grasp. From my experience, the hardest part isn't just the demanding physical tasks like changing dressings or assisting with basic hygiene—it’s the emotional weight that comes with forming bonds with elderly patients who may be at the most vulnerable stage of their lives. I’ve seen firsthand how nurses in aged care wards navigate this emotional terrain daily. They witness decline and loss, yet continue to provide compassionate care with patience and dedication. The job involves unpredictable situations, ranging from managing complex health needs to calming patients who might be confused or distressed, sometimes even facing aggressive behaviors like hitting or scratching, often due to dementia or other cognitive conditions. What struck me most was the contrast between the crucial, life-saving work they do and the inadequate recognition and compensation they receive. Despite being on the front lines, nurses in geriatric care often feel undervalued. Their work is physically backbreaking and emotionally taxing—beyond the typical perception of nursing duties. This reality makes me appreciate even more the men and women who choose this path. They exemplify quiet heroism, demonstrating resilience and empathy in a role that is both incredibly hard and absolutely vital. It’s a reminder that the care geriatric nurses provide today might one day be the care we or our loved ones receive. They deserve not only our gratitude but also greater respect and support from society, both morally and financially.
