Tables I’ve upcycled with Celtic art

You know, there's just something incredibly satisfying about taking an old, forgotten piece of furniture and breathing new life into it. For me, that's where the magic of functional art truly comes alive! I absolutely love upcycling tables and transforming them into something not only useful but also beautiful enough to spark joy and conversation. It’s not just about painting; it’s about giving an object a new story. When I think about 'functional art,' I immediately picture items like my upcycled tables. They're not just decorative; they're meant to be used, to hold your morning coffee, or to gather around for a meal. Imagine a plain wooden picnic table – functional, yes, but a bit bland. Now, picture that same table adorned with intricate designs. It's still a picnic table, but it's been elevated to a piece of art, showcasing personality and craftsmanship. I’ve even thought about how some of these designs could easily brighten up a common area, like a chemistry building's breakroom or outdoor seating, adding a touch of unexpected charm to often utilitarian spaces. One of my absolute favorite motifs to incorporate into my upcycled pieces is Celtic knotwork. There’s a timeless elegance and complexity to these designs that I find endlessly fascinating. Specifically, I’ve been drawn to crafting quaternary Celtic knots. If you're not familiar, these are types of knots characterized by their four-fold symmetry, often representing interconnectedness, strength, and continuity. They involve four distinct strands or patterns that interweave seamlessly, creating a balanced and visually striking design. They're a bit more challenging than simpler knots, but the result is always so rewarding! The way the lines flow and intertwine creates a sense of endless movement, making them perfect for adding depth to a flat table surface. My process usually starts with finding the right table. Sometimes it’s a roadside find, other times a thrift store gem. Once I have my canvas, the real fun begins! First, thorough cleaning and sanding are crucial to ensure the surface is smooth and ready for paint. For the knotwork itself, I sometimes freehand if the design is simple, but for more intricate quaternary knots, I often use stencils I’ve created or transfer paper to get the patterns just right. I use durable acrylic paints, layering colors to make the knots pop. The key is patience, especially with the weaving lines. After the design is complete and thoroughly dry, sealing is the most critical step, especially if the table is going to be used as a functional piece, perhaps even outdoors like a picnic table. I use several coats of a high-quality polyurethane or epoxy resin for a durable, waterproof finish. This not only protects the art from spills and scratches but also makes it incredibly easy to clean. It ensures that my functional art pieces can truly withstand daily life and continue to be enjoyed for years to come. It’s so satisfying to know that something I’ve created isn't just sitting there, but is actively being used and appreciated!
