if you're heading to New Zealand's South Island and are looking for a challenging hike with incredible views, consider /Isthmus Peak Track!
it has similar stats to its more popular cousin /Roys Peak (which is well known for the views at sunrise), but is less crowded, and offers amazing views at every point. I completed the hike in about 8 hours at my own slow comfortable pace, including lots of breaks. (the website says it's a 5-7 hours hike lol)
on the way up, you get incredible views of Lake Hāwea, which is possibly the most beautiful lake I've ever seen. She's beautiful at every angle and elevation 🥹 near the top, you start to see Lake Wanaka on your left and Lake Hāwea on your right, and it's such a magical feeling being surrounded by so much natural beauty. At the peak, you get rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of both lakes and the surrounding mountains.

... Read moreHaving completed the Isthmus Peak Track myself, I can attest that it offers a uniquely rewarding hiking experience. Despite being less famous than the nearby Roys Peak, the trail showcases equally stunning views of the pristine South Island landscape. One of the most striking highlights is the constant visual treat of Lake Hāwea, whose crystal-clear blue waters contrast beautifully with the rugged mountain backdrop. The track climbs steadily, providing excellent vantage points and numerous photo opportunities along the way.
Many hikers underestimate the duration of the hike; while official estimates suggest 5-7 hours, I took closer to 8 hours, factoring in breaks for rest and soaking in the scenery at a relaxed pace. The elevation gain of about 1,000 meters makes it a moderate to challenging trek, so preparing with adequate food, water, and proper footwear is essential. Also important is the seasonal closure from November 20 to December 20 to protect fawning wildlife, so planning your visit accordingly is a must.
At the summit, standing at 1386 meters above sea level, the panoramic views of both Lake Wanaka to the left and Lake Hāwea to the right offer a rare and magical feeling of immersion in untouched nature. This makes the Isthmus Peak Track a perfect choice for those seeking both tranquility and spectacular scenery away from more crowded trails.
In addition to the natural beauty, the track embodies the principle of #leavenotrace, encouraging all hikers to carry out their rubbish and respect the environment. This commitment helps preserve the pristine condition of the area and ensures that future adventurers can enjoy the same pristine experience. For anyone exploring New Zealand's South Island, adding Isthmus Peak Track to your itinerary will provide both physical challenge and awe-inspiring rewards—truly a hidden gem worth discovering.
Well done!! I did it too! The slope is really steep 😬🤪
