Sometimes when getting caught up in the department management side of my job I forget the real reason as to why I love my job.
Engaging with customers and helping them try new cheese is one of the most rewarding parts of my job!
You might see us behind the counter, gracefully slicing a wedge of Gruyère or carefully wrapping a fresh chèvre, and wonder, 'What does a cheesemonger even do all day?' Believe me, it's so much more than just selling cheese! It's a unique blend of passion, precision, and sometimes, a little bit of unexpected magic. From the outside, it might look like a dream job, surrounded by delicious cheese. And it often is! But there's also a significant management side of the job that can be incredibly demanding. Imagine overseeing a department with over 100 highly perishable individual products, each with its own specific storage, aging, and rotation needs. It's a constant balancing act to ensure everything is fresh, beautifully presented, and ready for our customers. There's ordering, inventory, receiving, and making sure nothing goes to waste. It can be stressful, and honestly, sometimes the administrative tasks pull me away from the very reason I love this line of work: the cheese and the people. That's why moments like a recent demo of a truly special cheese, Rogue River Blue, are so vital. I'll admit, sometimes the thought of spending two hours giving out samples isn't the most appealing, especially when I have a mountain of other tasks. But this particular demo reminded me of the profound joy in my job. I had accidentally ordered an extra wheel of this incredible cheese, and I knew it was meant to be shared. I confess, I’d never demoed Rogue River Blue before, assuming everyone in the ‘cheese lover’s echo chamber’ already knew its glory. But I quickly realized that's not the case for most people, and that's where we, as cheesemongers, come in. Watching people take their first bite of Rogue River Blue, seeing their eyes light up, and hearing their genuine 'wows' – that's an experience you can't put a price on. It’s like being a culinary matchmaker, helping someone discover a new favorite. I ended up selling over a wheel and a half, which was amazing, but the real reward was knowing I had introduced so many more individuals to this exceptional cheese. Their customer's reaction was pure gold, and it truly reignited my love for the retail side of the cheese industry. Beyond just selling, a cheesemonger is an educator and a guide. We spend countless hours learning about cheese origins, milk types, aging processes, and flavor profiles so we can share that knowledge with you. We can recommend the perfect cheese for your charcuterie board, tell you how to pair it with wine or beer, or suggest a new variety to expand your palate. It’s about creating an experience, not just a transaction. If you're ever in a cheese shop, don't be shy! Ask questions. Tell your cheesemonger what you like, what you've tried, and what you're looking for. We love helping you explore and discover. We're here to offer samples, share stories, and ensure you leave with the perfect cheese for any occasion. It’s a job that demands dedication and knowledge, but the connection we make with customers over a shared love of cheese is what makes all the hard work worthwhile. And sometimes, it’s a necessary reminder for us to 'take a break' from the hustle and simply enjoy what we do – like savoring a delicious piece of Rogue River Blue ourselves!
