... Read moreHey dragon lovers! Following up on my intro to Ricki, Lola, and Reina, I wanted to share a bit more about their unique personalities and some practical tips I've picked up along the way. It’s been such a journey raising these three, and every day brings new joys and learning curves.
Let’s talk about something many new bearded dragon parents wonder about: harnesses and leashes, often mistakenly called 'collars.' While you might see cute pictures online, using a traditional collar on a bearded dragon is generally a big no-no. Their necks are very delicate, and a collar can cause serious injury, restrict breathing, or even choke them. Instead, if you want to take your beardie outdoors safely for some natural sunlight (which is super important for their vitamin D3!), a well-fitting harness is the way to go.
I remember when I first considered taking Ricki outside. I did so much research to find the right harness. You need one specifically designed for reptiles, usually made of soft, adjustable leather or nylon. It should fit snugly around their chest and front legs, allowing them full movement without being able to slip out. Never leave your bearded dragon unsupervised when they’re in a harness, and always ensure they’re comfortable. The goal is safe exploration, not stress! Ricki, for instance, loves basking in a sunny spot in the yard, but only for short periods.
Speaking of sunbathing, my dragons absolutely adore their window sills, as you might have seen in some of the photos! It's their favorite spot to soak up some warmth, though I always make sure they have a shaded area to retreat to if they get too warm. It’s amazing how much joy they get from just observing the world outside.
And their diets! Lola is a huge fan of spaghetti squash, which is a fantastic staple veggie for them. It’s hydrating and packed with nutrients. I try to offer a variety of fresh greens and vegetables daily, alongside their insect protein. Providing a balanced diet is key to their long-term health and vibrant scales. I've learned that consistency is so important, but also offering new things to keep them engaged.
Reina, my third dragon, is a bit more adventurous than Ricki and Lola. She's always exploring every nook and cranny of her enclosure and loves climbing on her favorite log. Each of my dragons has such distinct quirks. Ricki is the calm observer, Lola is the enthusiastic eater, and Reina is the curious explorer.
Caring for 'Reina's reptiles' (as I sometimes fondly call them at home!) has taught me so much about patience and dedication. From maintaining their ideal temperatures and humidity to ensuring they have proper enrichment, it’s a full-time commitment. But seeing them thrive and interact with their environment makes it all incredibly rewarding. If you're considering getting a bearded dragon, be prepared for a wonderful, engaging pet that truly becomes part of the family!
