... Read moreI've been on a mission to find my perfect matcha, and after seeing Mellow Matcha pop up everywhere, especially with its gorgeous branding, I finally decided to dive into their premium blend. Everyone kept asking, 'is this matcha brand as good as their packaging?' So, I set out to answer that question myself.
My first impression was definitely swayed by the Mellow Matcha tin. It’s undeniably aesthetic and feels really high-quality. I appreciate that it's reusable, and the thought of refill options is a big plus for sustainability. But, as we all know, pretty packaging doesn't guarantee a great product. Upon opening the tin, I was greeted by a vibrant, deep green matcha powder. The color was promising, indicating a good quality ceremonial grade, and the smell was fresh and slightly sweet, not grassy or fishy like some lower quality matchas can be. I even did a quick comparison with some other powder swatches I had, and Mellow Matcha definitely held its own in terms of visual appeal.
To get a true sense of its flavor profile, I first prepared it as a traditional usucha – just whisked matcha with hot water. I was aiming for a smooth, frothy bowl. While it whisked up nicely and had a pleasant, creamy texture, I noticed a distinct, almost lingering dry taste on my palate. It wasn't unpleasant, but it definitely stood out, especially if you're used to very sweet or umami-forward matchas. It was smooth, yes, but the dryness was a surprising element.
Next, I moved on to my go-to preparation: an iced matcha latte. This is where most of my matcha consumption happens, so it was a crucial test. I used my usual recipe: two scoops of Mellow Matcha, a splash of hot water to whisk it into a paste, then topped with oat milk and a drizzle of honey for a touch of sweetness. The deep green color still shone through beautifully in the latte. I stirred it all up, and took my first sip. The latte offered a much more balanced taste compared to the usucha. The oat milk and honey really helped to mellow out that dryness I experienced earlier, resulting in a creamy, enjoyable drink. However, even in the latte, I could still detect that subtle dry aftertaste, though it was far less pronounced.
Overall, my Mellow Matcha review experience left me with mixed feelings. The premium blend certainly delivers on aesthetics and has a good, vibrant color and fresh aroma. For those who primarily enjoy iced matcha lattes, especially with a touch of sweetness, it performs quite well, offering a balanced taste. The reusable Mellow Matcha tin is a definite bonus. But if you're a purist who prefers usucha, or if you're sensitive to slightly dry notes in your matcha, you might find it a bit different from what you expect. Is it worth it? If you value beautiful packaging and a decent iced latte experience, it could be a lovely addition to your kitchen. But for a purely traditional matcha experience, you might want to explore other options. It's a solid contender, but perhaps not a standout for every single matcha lover out there.
