raising my kids to be kind with a sprinkle of FAFO just in case 🙂↕️
Raising children to be kind yet resilient is a balancing act many parents strive to master. The phrase 'FAFO,' which stands for 'Find Out' or 'F*** Around and Find Out,' playfully suggests teaching kids to understand consequences if they push boundaries too far. In my parenting journey, I have found that incorporating kindness as the foundation, sprinkled lightly with FAFO, helps kids develop empathy alongside healthy assertiveness. Practically, this means encouraging open communication so children feel safe expressing feelings while also understanding limits. For example, when my child encounters conflicts, I guide them to respond kindly but firmly, explaining why certain behaviors are unacceptable and what the natural results could be. This approach helps kids grow confidence and critical thinking skills. Additionally, teaching kindness includes modeling it through everyday actions, such as helping others, listening actively, and showing gratitude. Yet, I also remind my kids that it’s okay to stand their ground and that not everyone will always treat them fairly, hence the importance of that ‘sprinkle of FAFO’. This balance equips them to navigate social situations wisely. Incorporating humor and lightness, just like the phrase FAFO suggests, can reduce tension and help children learn from mistakes without feeling shamed. Over time, this parenting style cultivates compassionate individuals who are also empowered to protect themselves and make thoughtful choices in life.
