I did a very quick workout first thing this morning and then later I did the main workout (warmup, upper push day, finisher, and core circuit). The details on that will be included in my accountability post in the morning. I like to have my full day done (sleep, steps, calories consumed cause I’m on a calorie deficit, and burned calories… I also burn calories when I sleep).
Leave a 💪🏻 if you finished your workout whether it was today’s upper push workout or something you did on your own.
... Read moreHey fitness fam! So glad you're curious about heart rates during workouts. I've been tracking mine religiously as part of my 90-day challenge, and it's been a total game-changer for understanding my body. Today's main upper push workout had my heart rate averaging a solid 99 BPM, which feels like a sweet spot for my intensity level! Even my quick 3-minute morning warm-up got my heart pumping at 89 BPM, showing how every little bit counts.
Now, you might be wondering, what does an average of 99 BPM actually mean during a workout? For me, it typically falls into a moderate intensity zone. It's not an all-out sprint, but definitely enough to feel challenged, build endurance, and effectively burn calories. In this zone, I can still hold a conversation, but I'm definitely a bit breathless – a great sign I'm pushing myself!
Understanding your target heart rate zones is super important for optimizing your workouts. Your ideal heart rate depends on your age and fitness goals. A simple way to estimate your maximum heart rate (MHR) is to subtract your age from 220. For example, if you're 30, your MHR would be around 190. Then, you can calculate your zones:
Fat-Burning Zone (50-70% of MHR): This is a lower intensity, great for beginners or longer, steady-state cardio sessions.
Cardio Zone (70-85% of MHR): This is often where I aim for my main workouts, like today's 99 BPM average. It's fantastic for building cardiovascular endurance and burning more calories. My peak today was 130 BPM, getting me well into that higher cardio zone!
Peak Zone (85%+ of MHR): Short bursts of high intensity, great for interval training.
So, how do I monitor my heart rate to ensure I'm hitting these zones? My absolute go-to is my fitness tracker! My smartwatch provides real-time feedback and detailed summaries, like the 99 BPM average and the impressive 268 calories I burned in just 41 minutes. It makes tracking progress so incredibly easy. If you don't have a tracker, you can always check your pulse manually. Just find your pulse on your wrist or neck, count the beats for 15 seconds, and multiply by 4. Do this quickly mid-workout to get an estimate.
Why does heart rate matter so much for my fitness goals? Firstly, for calorie burn. Working within your target heart rate zone ensures you're optimizing your calorie expenditure. With my current calorie deficit goal, knowing I burned 268 calories in my main session is incredibly motivating! Secondly, it's crucial for fitness progress. Seeing my average BPM consistently in a good zone, and my peak HR hitting 130, tells me I'm pushing myself and improving my cardiovascular health. Lastly, it helps with avoiding overtraining or undertraining. It's a great gauge to see if I'm pushing too hard, or if a workout I thought was intense actually had my heart rate too low, indicating I need to step it up!
My top tips for hitting your heart rate goals and making the most of your workouts are:
Warm-up Properly: Even my 3-minute, 89 BPM quickie helps get the blood flowing. A good warm-up gradually increases your heart rate and prepares your body.
Listen to Your Body: Don't just chase numbers. If you feel dizzy, overly exhausted, or experience discomfort, scale back. Your body knows best.
Mix It Up: Incorporate different types of exercises. My upper push day might focus on strength, but the overall workout still gets my heart rate up.
Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can definitely affect your heart rate and overall performance.
Consistency is Key: Showing up daily, like my Day 98 today, gradually improves your heart's efficiency and your overall fitness.
Tracking my heart rate, seeing that 99 BPM average, truly motivates me to keep going. It's not just about lifting weights; it's about making sure my body is working efficiently and getting stronger from the inside out. What's your target heart rate, and how do you track it? Share your tips below!
