❗️Disclaimer - this was the last render before tweaking material / colour selections prior to the big reno!!
So, there were significantly less “big” changes - mainly final tweaks 😌
honestly goes without saying that there will ALWAYS be unexpected changes - so the final results wont be 100% similiar to the 3D render!
🍽️ 𝗗𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺
• 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩
The unique, bean-shaped island was always part of the plan! Custom-built for the homeowners, it actdd as a subtle divider between the kitchen and dining area.
We originally designed it with fluted panelling at the sides, but eventually switched to a smooth dark wood laminate to better match the rest of the home
• 𝘓𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘚𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯
After seeing the renders, we felt that original wood grain was a bit too loud 😅
So we swapped it for a darker laminate with softer, more subtle veining for a cleaner look

We also replaced the originally selected mahogany wood to a darker one! Together with the herringbone pattern, the vinyl tiles w the wood-like texture made it such a practical choice instead of real wood 👌
🍳 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻
• 𝘊𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘵 𝘓𝘢𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘵
To free up more room for the living and dining area, we pushed in the tall built-in cabinetry further into the kitchen wall. In turn, this helps to create a more compact kitchen without compromising on functionality!
• 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭
We also switched out the white marble countertop to an off-white travertine-inspired finish - lesser texture for a more elegant finish (since we swapped out for a “cleaner” laminate) and more cost-effective 💰
🛋️ 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺
• 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳
Then homeowners really wanted a pop of colour, and it came through in the TV feature wall!
Instead of a deep olive green, we chose a lighter olive shade that still adds character while making the space feel brighter and more open 🌾
🛏️ 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺
The bedroom had a slightly bigger (in area) transformation
• 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘗𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦
Originally following a darker olive green palette (for the bedside wall), we switched to a lighter beige to brighten up the bedroom - honestly a better choice, else it will be too dark = turn on the lights in the day 🥹 not the most practical choice!
It also served as a good contrast to the darker toned laminates that continued throughout the master~
• 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘗𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨
We also did this half-height panelling with reccessed squares (also known as shaker-style panels), which we updated to the same laminate used in the other parts of the home!!
This gives the home a more cohesive look while introducing a subtler wood grain for a more elevated finish ~
• 𝘈𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨
A critical feature we decided to keep was the LED strip lighting above the panelling!
It helps to add a warm ambient glow that’s perfect for winding down and when the homeowners just need a little light without switching on the main lights 🙂↕️

Renovating a home is an exciting but often unpredictable journey, as I've experienced first-hand during my recent project. One aspect I came to appreciate deeply is how final renovations almost always differ and improve beyond the initial 3D renders. For instance, this project’s unique bean-shaped kitchen island illustrates the benefit of custom designs that fit the homeowner’s lifestyle while acting as subtle space dividers. Initially designed with fluted paneling, it was later changed to dark wood laminate with softer veining to harmonize with the overall interior theme, emphasizing that subtle texture can elevate a room without overwhelming it. Flooring choices also significantly impact a space's coziness and practicality. Opting for vinyl tiles with wood-like textures over real mahogany wood proved brilliant—offering the elegance of wood while providing durability and easier maintenance. This balance of beauty and function is key in any home renovation. In the kitchen, compact yet functional layouts maximize usable space. Pushing cabinetry into the wall freed room for living and dining areas without sacrificing storage, while changing the countertop from white marble to an off-white, travertine-inspired finish brought a cleaner, elegant vibe at a better cost. These thoughtful material swaps underscore how design adapts with practical considerations. Living rooms benefit greatly from lighter, livelier color palettes. Choosing a lighter olive green for the TV feature wall brightened the space and added character, demonstrating how color shifts influence mood and perception of size. Similarly, in the master bedroom, swapping a dark olive green for a lighter beige not only brightened the room but complemented darker wood paneling for a balanced, upscale feel. Details like half-height shaker-style wall paneling and ambient LED strip lighting exemplify how layered textures and lighting create warmth and sophistication. These elements contribute to a seamless blend of mid-century modern aesthetics with modern comforts. My takeaway? While 3D renders provide valuable foresight, staying flexible and open to tweaks is essential. Unexpected changes often enhance design quality and livability, proving that the renovation process is as much about discovery as execution. This mindset helped me embrace the journey and cherish the final results—far better than initially imagined.
