learned of this tradition while recording my April episode of @yourecreepingmeout with @sharksareforever. Episode is it out yet but be sure to subscribe to hear all about this tradition!
also, the problem with any kind of prank that involves planting things is that those things can then be replanted in retaliation. I fear for where else I’m going to find these things today. I encourage everyone else to keep on the Swedish April fish tradition!
I recently dove into the Swedish April Fish tradition myself, and I have to say, it’s one of the most delightful and harmless pranks I've encountered. In Sweden and parts of France, instead of simply yelling 'April Fools,' people tape paper fish to each other’s backs or belongings as a playful joke. It's a lighthearted way to join in the April Fools' spirit but with a cultural twist. What makes this tradition so enjoyable is the social interaction it encourages. You have to be observant to spot the paper fish on others—this makes the prank more of an engaging game throughout the day. One trick I learned is to distribute several paper fish around your home or workspace to surprise friends and family repeatedly, embracing the prank's playful nature. But be warned: as I discovered, the prank can escalate quickly with retaliation. After I planted a few paper fish, I found them mysteriously reappearing on my belongings, which only added to the fun. It's like a lighthearted prank war that keeps everyone guessing. Additionally, taking the prank beyond just sticking fish on backs, some people get creative by taping fish to unusual objects or hiding them in unexpected places, making the day even more entertaining. If you’re planning to participate, keep a sense of humor handy and prepare for some surprise fish sightings! Overall, embracing this tradition added a wonderful cultural layer to my April Fools’ Day celebrations. It’s a reminder that pranking can be fun, innocent, and culturally enriching if done with kindness and creativity. Whether you’re in Sweden, France, or anywhere else, giving the April Fish prank a try will bring lots of laughs and memorable moments.
