Replant, String of Watermelons

Soooooooooo, I bought this baby a couple of months ago and did not realize that there were mealybugs hiding in the soil, the thing that gives me major ick. I sprayed several times with homemade mealybug killer, to no avail, kept seeing sucked on leaves. Finally dug up everything, threw OG dirt away, cut unaffected plant parts, rinsed them, sprayed them again and potted them up. Not trifling enough, hope the bugs are gone for good! #lotsofprettyplants #ihavealotofplants #protectiveplantmom

... Read moreOh, the dreaded 'leggy' plant! It’s a common frustration for plant parents, and it can happen to many different types of plants, including both traditional watermelon seedlings and our beloved String of Watermelons succulents. When a plant becomes 'leggy,' it means its stems are long, stretched out, and often weak, with sparse leaves. This usually happens because it's desperately reaching for more light. Let's first talk about actual watermelon seedlings (the kind that grow delicious fruit!). If your young watermelon plants are looking leggy, it's almost always a sign they aren't getting enough bright sunshine. They might also be getting too much nitrogen fertilizer, or they could be overcrowded, all vying for the same limited light. To fix this, you'll want to move them to a sunnier spot, thin out any overcrowded seedlings to give them space, and ensure you're using a balanced fertilizer. Proper air circulation also helps prevent them from stretching. Now, for our beautiful String of Watermelons (Curio herreanus), which is a succulent, legginess is also a common issue. Just like other succulents, these charming plants need a lot of bright, indirect light to stay compact and healthy. If they're in a spot that's too dim, they'll start to stretch out, with their plump, tear-drop shaped leaves becoming more spaced out along thin stems. This can make them look a bit sad and sparse, much like the 'minor imperfections' you might see on a plant that's been struggling, perhaps even from pest issues as mentioned in my own replanting journey. A plant weakened by mealybugs, for instance, might also be less resilient to low-light conditions. So, how do you fix a leggy String of Watermelons? The first step is to move it to a brighter location. A south-facing window (in the Northern Hemisphere) or a spot with ample indirect light is usually ideal. You might even consider using a grow light if natural light is scarce. Once you've improved the light, the existing leggy growth won't magically compact, but new growth will be healthier and more robust. For the old stretched-out sections, you can prune them back. Don't worry, String of Watermelons are quite resilient! You can even take those healthy cuttings from the pruned sections and propagate them to create new, bushier plants. Just let the cut ends callus over for a few days, then place them on well-draining soil, and they'll often root quite easily. It's a fantastic way to rejuvenate your plant and even multiply your collection! Remember, consistent care, plenty of light, and vigilant pest checks (like my battle with mealybugs!) are key to keeping your String of Watermelons thriving and avoiding that 'leggy' look.
