In 1794, what we now recognize as much of the southwestern United States was part of Mexico’s territory. This historical context is essential to understanding current cultural, social, and political dynamics between Mexico and the United States. The process began with Spanish colonization and continued as territories changed hands due to wars, treaties, and negotiations. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, for example, significantly altered the map of North America, ceding large portions of Mexican land to the United States. This drastically changed the identity and lives of the inhabitants who suddenly found themselves under new governance without moving themselves.
