Got the garden cleaned up a little bit yesterday.

Hey fellow gardeners! I just spent a whole day getting my garden beds cleaned up here in Ohio, and I wanted to share my experience, especially if you're tackling an overgrown plot before planting. It's amazing how quickly things can get out of hand, right? But with a bit of elbow grease and a plan, you can transform your space. First things first, I started by clearing all the winter debris. This meant raking up fallen leaves, pulling out dead annuals from last season, and removing any random bits of trash that blew in. It’s like hitting the reset button! Once the surface was clear, I moved on to the real challenge: the weeds. My beds were pretty overgrown, so I went through with a hand weeder and a small hoe, carefully loosening the soil around the roots and pulling out as much as I could. I find it’s easiest to do this after a rain or a good watering, when the soil is damp and the roots come out more easily. For particularly stubborn perennial weeds, I made sure to get every last piece of the root to prevent them from growing back. After weeding, the next crucial step was enriching the soil. I added a generous layer of homemade compost and some aged manure to my beds. This really helps to replenish nutrients that were used up last season and improves the soil structure. I then used a broadfork to gently loosen the existing soil, working the amendments in. You want that fluffy, tilled soil for your new plants to thrive in! It makes such a difference in drainage and root development. For some of my rows, especially where I plan to plant heat-loving vegetables, I decided to lay down black plastic covers. This is a fantastic trick for warming up the soil early in the season and also helps to suppress weeds. I secured the edges with rocks and soil, making sure it was taut. This will give my small plants a head start when they go into the ground. Speaking of small plants, I've also been busy with my seedling trays. I've got various herbs and early greens sprouting under some white mesh covers to protect them from curious critters and harsh sun while they're still young. It’s always exciting to see those first tiny leaves emerge! Once they're robust enough, they'll be transplanted into these newly prepped garden beds. The whole process of cleaning, enriching, and preparing the beds really sets the stage for a productive growing season. It might seem like a lot of work initially, but trust me, it pays off big time when your plants are healthy and happy!
