Always From the Sidelines
Having a chronic illness is a spectator sport. When there's snow and sledding going on, I'm sitting it out in my snow pants. When they're playing, I'm laughing from the sidelines. When we're doing anything more than walking, I can only enjoy from my seat.
Does it suck? Yes. But do I still want my kids to have fun and enjoy their childhood? Also yes. I will do what I can within the limitations of my body. For them 🩷💙
Living with a chronic illness such as fibromyalgia or chronic pain means constantly adapting and embracing a new way of life. As a parent, I’ve learned firsthand how challenging it can be to watch your children play and participate in activities while you’re confined to the sidelines. Despite the physical limitations, it’s vital to focus on what we can control—our attitude and presence. I often find that being present emotionally is just as important as being physically active. My kids sense my love and support even when I can’t join in their games or outdoor fun. Over time, I’ve discovered creative ways to engage with them, whether that’s through storytelling, planning small indoor activities, or simply cheering them on enthusiastically during their playtime. Managing chronic illness requires patience and acceptance. Sometimes the pain and fatigue make it impossible to do more than watch, but I choose to see these moments as opportunities to bond differently. It’s a reminder to value quality time over quantity and to appreciate the small joys that come with parenting.
