“Are we overstimulating our babies with screens?”

💭 Recently, someone in the childcare industry advised us:

👉 No TV, phones, or computers for babies—especially below 18 months old.

At first, I thought…

“Is it really that serious? 😅”

Because honestly, it felt so normal:

📺 TV in the background

💻 Working from home with baby beside me

📱 Scrolling while holding him

But after reading up…

👉 Turns out, it is a big deal.

Screens can overstimulate young babies, especially those under 18 months.

___

👀 What I’ve been noticing

Kids today seem to:

• Lose focus faster

• Have shorter attention spans

Compared to 20–30 years ago…

I wonder:

Could early screen exposure be part of it,

especially with highly engaging visuals? 🤔

____

🌿 Screens & Babies: What I Learned

Most screen content is:

⚡ Fast-moving

🌈 Highly colourful

💡 Bright (unnatural lighting)

→ Compared to real life, this is intense stimulation.

So when it comes to:

📖 Books

🧸 Quiet play

🌳 Real-world exploration

…these may feel “less exciting,” making it harder for babies to stay engaged.

___

🌱 What I’m doing instead

Now, I try to be more intentional:

🚫 Keep screens out of baby’s sight when devices are on (try my best)

🌿 Bring him outdoors more often

Letting him:

- Touch 🤲

- Hear 👂

- Observe 👀

- Explore 🌏

At his own pace 🤍

___

💡 Takeaway:

✨ Nature and sensory play are a young baby’s best teachers ✨

💭 Daddies and mummies,

what are your tips for managing screen time while juggling work and baby? 🤍

2 days agoEdited to

... Read moreAs a parent balancing work and childcare, I’ve also struggled with the lure of screens around my little one. Initially, I didn’t think background TV or scrolling while holding my baby could be harmful, but learning about how highly engaging screens—fast-moving, colorful, and bright—can actually overstimulate young babies changed my approach. Babies’ brains are developing rapidly, and intense visual and auditory stimulation from screens may make real-world experiences feel ‘less exciting’ by comparison. This can affect their attention spans and ability to focus over time. Instead, I noticed that when we spent more time outdoors or engaged in sensory play, my baby seemed calmer and more curious, exploring at his own pace through touch, hearing, and observation. One practical strategy I adopted is to keep screens off or out of sight whenever possible. For instance, I mute notifications and put my phone away during playtime. I also prioritize outdoor walks, letting my baby experience the natural environment—feeling leaves, listening to birds, watching clouds move. These simple actions help him build real connections with his surroundings without screen interference. Additionally, when indoor quiet play is necessary, I opt for books, soft toys, and simple games that stimulate senses gently without overwhelming him. It’s not always easy, especially when working from home, but small intentional changes have made a positive difference in both his mood and our bonding time. I encourage fellow parents to reflect on their screen habits around babies and look for creative ways to bring more nature and sensory exploration into daily routines. This thoughtful balance supports healthy brain development and nurtures a love for the world beyond screens.

Why do toddlers love doing the same thing again and again? Grace spent almost the whole time riding the little trikes at The Joy Of Toys. Again. And again. And again. The reason why toddlers repeat activities is because repetition strengthens balance, coordination and motor planning.
