mental health
If your parents don’t believe in anxiety and depression, it can be frustrating and isolating, especially if you’re trying to manage these conditions on your own. There are several reasons why some people, especially older generations, struggle to accept or understand mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
In many cultures and families, mental health issues carry a stigma. This stigma can lead to a belief that admitting to anxiety or depression is a sign of weakness or failure. Other cultures believe it’s just all in the head and doesn’t exist. Older generations may not have grown up with the same level of mental health education available today. Without a solid understanding, they might see anxiety or depression as something temporary or as an overreaction. As the oldest daughter who suffered with her mental health, I had the parents who didn’t believe in depression or anxiety. Luckily, after many years my parents are better educated on the importance of mental health.
