the pressure of being the oldest

Being the older sibling is honestly scary sometimes. There’s this constant pressure that comes with knowing your younger siblings are watching you, looking up to you, whether you feel ready for that responsibility or not. My mom used to remind me all the time “They’re going to follow your example.”

But the truth is, I didn’t. I had a rough start to adulthood. I stopped going to college, struggled to find a stable job, and there were moments where I really didn’t know what I was doing with my life. I felt like I was falling behind while still trying to carry the weight of being a role model. It was exhausting.

Now that I’m in my mid to late 20s, things are finally starting to come together. I’m married to the love of my life, we bought a house, and we’ve been traveling and living the kind of life I always hoped for. It didn’t happen overnight. It took a lot of failure, doubt, and pushing through.

I hope my siblings can see that. I hope they understand that life doesn’t always go the way you expect, and that’s okay. What matters is that you keep going. If you work hard and stay true to yourself, you’ll find your way. I want them to know that even if I stumbled, I got back up and they can too.

... Read moreBeing the oldest sibling comes with its own set of challenges, including the pressure to lead by example. It's common to feel overwhelmed when younger siblings are looking up to you, especially during times of self-doubt. Many eldest siblings, like the author, face struggles such as transitioning to adulthood, dealing with failures, and the need to maintain a strong front for their siblings. The pressure can often lead to hiding one's struggles, making it hard to ask for help. However, it’s essential to recognize that everyone has their own timeline in life. It's normal to have ups and downs, and embracing these experiences is a crucial life lesson for younger siblings. It's important to convey to them that perseverance is key—though there may be stumbling blocks, getting back on track is what truly matters. Being open about the challenges faced can foster a supportive environment and help siblings understand that they are not alone in their journeys. By sharing personal stories of overcoming hardships, the oldest siblings can inspire their younger counterparts to pursue their paths with resilience and authenticity.
