the distance strengthened our relationship

My siblings and I have always had a complicated relationship. Growing up, we never really expressed our love for each other out loud. We didn’t say “I love you,” we didn’t hug, and we definitely didn’t share our secrets. It wasn’t that we didn’t care it was just how we were. We coexisted under the same roof, fighting over silly things and silently looking out for each other in our own awkward ways. Sometimes it felt like we were strangers who just happened to be family.

When I finally moved out, something shifted between us. The distance created space for us to breathe and see each other differently. Suddenly, they started calling me just to see how I was doing, and I found myself actually missing them. Being apart made us appreciate each other more. We didn’t have the daily tension of sharing chores, fighting over the TV, or dealing with each other’s bad moods. Without all that, we could talk more openly, even if we still weren’t saying “I love you” out loud or hugging every time we met.

What really changed is that we each started growing into our own person outside of the old family roles. We weren’t just the older sibling, the middle child, or the baby anymore we were adults trying to understand each other as people. Now when we see each other, there’s a sense of respect that wasn’t there before. We still don’t hug much or spill all our secrets, but we laugh more, talk longer, and show we care in little ways that mean even more than words sometimes.

I know we may never be the type of siblings who say “I love you” at the end of every phone call or hug each other every time we meet. But I’m okay with that now. I’ve realized that the love between us was always there it just needed space and time to reveal itself in the ways we know how to give it. And that’s more than enough for me.
