Am I overreacting?

So my husband and I went out of town for two weeks for our honeymoon. His family asked for our keys so they can get our mail and put it in the garage.

When I came home, I noticed that things were moved around. One of my frames that I had on the counter broke… but they did replace it.

Our sheets and laundry were all washed and put away. They never mentioned anything about cleaning our house so it just shocked me that they had gone into every single room and closet. I felt like they were in our personal things. I don’t know if I should confront them about it and ask them or just let it go? #GirlTalk #AskLemon8 #lemon8challenge #lemon8contest #girlpov

... Read moreIt’s common to feel uncomfortable when someone enters your private space without explicit permission, especially when it involves personal belongings and areas like closets and bedrooms. Although your in-laws’ intentions were likely good, such as wanting to help by doing laundry or tidying up, the fact that they went through every room and closet without informing you first can understandably feel like an invasion of privacy. Many people experience this dilemma when close family members step beyond agreed boundaries. Some would appreciate the help; others may feel their personal space is violated. It’s important to communicate your feelings honestly. You might say something like, "I appreciate that you helped with the laundry and mail, but I was surprised that you went into every room and closet without asking. Could we please agree on what’s okay to touch in the future?" Remember that discussing this calmly can prevent resentment and encourage respect. Your husband’s response that it’s "no big deal" may indicate he views the gesture differently, but your feelings are valid. When considering whether you are overreacting, think about your comfort level with privacy and boundaries. If your home feels less like your safe space now, it’s worth talking to your family about it. Lastly, broken items like the picture frame being replaced is thoughtful, but it doesn’t erase the discomfort caused by the unexpected intrusion. Setting clear expectations about what areas are private and what help you welcome can avoid these problems in the future and strengthen family relationships.
