Is this toxic behavior?

Blocking my partner after an argument used to feel like “protecting my peace.” But looking back, it was avoidance, not boundaries. It shut down communication instead of solving anything. If anything I made everything worse. We wouldn’t communicate, we would stay mad, and it was the worst cycle ever.

Healthy conflict requires staying present, even when it’s uncomfortable. Silence can hurt more than the argument itself.

... Read moreBlocking your partner after an argument might seem like a way to protect your peace, but it often becomes a barrier rather than a healthy boundary. Instead of resolving the issue, it can foster avoidance and deepen misunderstandings. When communication stops, resentment tends to build, making it difficult for both individuals to move past the conflict. Healthy conflict resolution requires staying engaged even when emotions run high. Avoiding silence by sharing feelings openly can prevent developing bitterness and mistrust. Instead of viewing blocking as a protective measure, it helps to recognize that addressing uncomfortable conversations is essential for emotional intimacy. Not all silence is peaceful; sometimes, it can cause more harm than the argument itself. Emotional distance created by blocking can feel like rejection and abandonment, disrupting the foundation of trust. To foster healthier interactions, couples should establish clear boundaries that allow time to cool down without completely shutting communication. If you find yourself blocking your partner frequently, it might be useful to reflect on the reasons behind this response. Are you trying to avoid conflict altogether, or are you protecting your wellbeing? Striking a balance by expressing your need for space while committing to revisit issues later can help prevent toxic cycles. Engaging in open dialogue, practicing active listening, and showing empathy during disagreements can turn conflicts into opportunities for growth. When both partners feel heard and respected, it strengthens the relationship and diminishes the need for harmful avoidance tactics like blocking. Remember, occasional arguments are normal, but how they are handled makes all the difference. Encouraging honest communication rather than silence promotes trust and understanding in your relationship.
