3 Psychology Hacks to destroy toxic energy

Psychology Series: Part 4 🧠 (Welcome back!)

Do you have that one coworker/relative/friend who drains your energy? 🧛‍♀️ I used to cry in the bathroom because of them. Now? I just outsmart them.

The moment you react, they win. The moment you detach, you win. Here is my toolkit for dealing with "Toxic People" while staying classy:

1️⃣ The "Grey Rock" Method Narcissists and toxic people are addicted to "Drama Supply". If you get angry, you are feeding them.

The Hack: Be boring. Be bland. Give short, factual answers.

Result: They will starve for attention and move on to an easier target.

2️⃣ The "Broken Record" Technique Stop J.A.D.E. (Justifying, Arguing, Defending, Explaining).

The Hack: Pick one phrase ("That doesn't work for me") and repeat it calmly.

Result: You cannot argue with a broken record. They will eventually give up.

3️⃣ The "Curiosity" Pivot Nothing confuses a rude person more than kindness.

The Hack: If they say something mean, pause and ask: "Are you doing okay? That sounded really harsh."

Result: It shines a spotlight on their behavior, not your reaction.

The Takeaway: Your peace is expensive. Don't let cheap people afford it. 💸

Who came to your mind while reading this? (Don't name them! 🤫)

Follow for Part 5! I’m sharing my best "Confidence Hacks" tomorrow. ✨

... Read moreDealing with toxic people can be emotionally exhausting, but using strategic psychological techniques can help you maintain your peace and protect your energy. The "Grey Rock" method is particularly effective because toxic individuals, especially narcissists, thrive on emotional reactions or drama supply—your strong responses act like fuel for their behavior. By acting uninteresting and giving concise, emotionless replies, you essentially starve them of the reaction they crave, causing them to lose interest and move on. Another critical approach is the "Broken Record" technique, where you avoid Justifying, Arguing, Defending, or Explaining (J.A.D.E.) yourself. Instead, calmly repeat a single phrase, such as "That doesn't work for me." This discourages further confrontation because it denies toxic individuals the opportunity to twist your words or engage you in endless debates, gradually wearing down their persistence. The "Curiosity" pivot serves as a unique way to handle rudeness or aggressive comments by responding with kindness and genuine interest, such as asking, "Are you doing okay? That sounded really harsh." This disarms the toxic person by shining a spotlight on their behavior rather than reacting defensively, flipping the power dynamic and often causing them to pause and reconsider their words. Importantly, these methods emphasize detaching emotionally from toxic interactions rather than engaging, as emotional reaction is what typically gives toxic people control. Your peace of mind is invaluable—setting firm boundaries and responding thoughtfully rather than reactively empowers you. In practice, applying these psychology hacks requires consistent mindfulness and patience, but with time, you can develop a resilient mindset that deflects manipulation and preserves your mental wellbeing. Remember, your emotional energy is precious—don't let toxic people "buy" it cheaply by feeding off your reactions. Consider pairing these tactics with self-care routines and supportive social connections to further bolster your resilience against toxic influences. Ultimately, mastering these techniques helps you maintain control over your emotional environment, reduces stress from toxic encounters, and fosters a healthier, more positive social experience.
