From Judah to Grace

This morning I published a new reflection that became very personal for me.

It started with a simple line I read in my devotional:

“Repentance isn’t when you cry. Repentance is when you change.”

That sentence stayed with me all morning. It made me think about the story of Judah… and about the quiet ways God changes our hearts over time.

Sometimes repentance doesn’t look dramatic.

Sometimes it’s simply turning our eyes back toward Him.

And when that happens, something else begins to change too.

The way we see ourselves.

The way we see the people we love.

Even the way we care for the life God has entrusted to us.

I wrote about that journey in a new piece called From Judah to Grace.

Sometimes the first place we begin to notice that change… is in the mirror.

You can read the full reflection at Elk River Reflections. 🤍

... Read moreReflecting on the theme of repentance and personal transformation, I’ve found that often the most profound changes happen quietly and gradually. The story of Judah, as mentioned in the reflection, illustrates how internal shifts in faith and perspective can lead to healing and growth over time. From my own experience, true repentance is less about outward expressions and more about sincere, inward change—turning back towards a loving presence and reassessing how we view ourselves and others. One of the most powerful aspects of this journey is noticing how change often starts with small moments of self-awareness, such as what the author describes as seeing that shift "in the mirror." It’s in these moments that we begin to recognize our growth, the subtle adjustments in our attitudes and behaviors that align more closely with grace and kindness. In practical terms, cultivating this transformation involves daily practices like prayer, meditation, or journaling—tools that help tune our hearts toward compassion and reconciliation rather than guilt or regret. It reminds me how mercy can soften even the hardest parts of ourselves and inspire us to care more deeply for the lives entrusted to us, including our own. This story resonates because it captures the essence of grace acting gently over time, without the need for dramatic displays. The journey from judgment—symbolized by Judah—to grace is something that anyone navigating faith or personal growth can relate to. It’s a testament to the power of quiet reflection and the courage to change from within.
