Banned Books You Have to Read

📚 Bridge To Terabithia By Katherine Patterson is the story of two friends separated by a terrible accident.

Why it's on the ban list:

Profanity: The use of "lord" and Damn"

Supernatural: The creation of a magical land is considered witchcraft by some religious groups.

Themes of Religion: Leslie's family isn't religious and some groups feel like that promotes atheism.

Edgy: Some parents feel like it's morbid and inappropriate for students to read about death.

📚The Golden Compass By Philip Pullman is about a young girl trying to save her best friend from a terrible fate.

It gets banned because some groups view it as a mockery of religion. There are elements of souls and some people believe that it's demonic. The author roots it in his religious upbringing and it gets compared to The Chronicles of Narnia where The Golden Compass is the bad version.

📚 The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is one of those books I feel like a majority of readers have read. If you haven't, it's a dystopian novel following a girl being sent into the Hunger Games, a yearly event where 24 kids fight to the death because there was a war. There's a bit of everything and I loved it.

The reason it gets banned is for the violence, which is fair on its own. But they combine it with being anti-government (who roots for a government happy about killing kids), Anti-Family (Katniss's dad is dead,) anti-ethnic (I'm not spoiling this), occult themes (I mean she denounces them so I don't want to count it.) and offensive language. Which makes it a little silly.

📚Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is about a teenager in high school being a high schooler.

It gets banned for dealing with things most high schoolers go through. I'm sorry but it's true.

📚Looking for Alaska by John Green is about another teenage boy and it also gets banned for teenager things.

📚 The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is about a girl living through World War Two. It follows her learning to read and stealing books off of the burn piles. Her family also takes in a Jewish man and hides him in the basement.

It gets banned for basically taking place during World War 2. Some people feel like the topic is hard for people to understand or really think about. They believe having the narrator be Death himself is a surreal thing and makes the book hard to read.
